Vehicle description
This is our Airstream project. I want to be up front, if you think you"re going to take it camping the weekend after you buy it, your wife might not appreciate you as much. . We bought this from a local Airstream dealership, it has basically been parked for years and owned by folks who didn"t love it or understand how to maintain it. So what started as a quick "fix up", turned into the conversation of "were going to have to go all the way if we"re going to do this right". This is a 1981 Airstream Excella Limited, 31" - somewhat rare for newer Airstreams and at the top of their trim line at the time (like today"s Classic). Several hundred hours of heating and peeling roof tar and caulk off of every single rivet and joint, we finally came to a good roof. We replaced all the vents with new Fantastic Fans, and serviced the original Armstrong A/C unit (that thing will cool the empty shell with no insulation to 65 degrees, in full sun on a 90" degree day!) The trailer had rot in the frame rails in the rear (it was a rear bath) so we had the Airstream dealer in Grand Rapids replace the frame from the rear axle all the way to the back bumper. We intended to skin the interior in sheeting of exterior (shiny) aluminum. So when we removed the interior skin, we rolled it and labeled it to use as templates when we finished the interior - meaning we have all the interior skin. The windows are the original double pane and have some leakage and discoloring. I intended to rebuild them and not smash the interior glass out like most do, so they are intact. The interior was hacked apart by the previous owners, we kept a few interior pieces to use as templates, as well as the folding bed frame and tambour does. It comes with all three original Zip-Dee awnings in the original blue and white stripe pattern. The awnings have no dents in the polished covers, and the fabric looks really well! There"s a couple seams that need to be re-stiched from age, but it looks like they never had them out. We installed new tires about 3 years ago, that have maybe 200 miles since. There is a new TV and radio antennas installed on the roof, and two new solar panels as well. What needs to be done - the floor needs to be patched or replaced. The interior shell needs to be put back together and a new interior constructed. All plumbing and electrical systems will need to be installed as well as appliances. (includes the original fridge and vent ducting which look like they have never been used - fridge works awesome!) this is basically a rolling shell that needs some trim finished on the exterior and a new interior. We have most all screen panels, trim pieces, caps and drawer pulls, the exterior trim and logos (the originals as well as new style to update the look) and the original aluminum lp gas tanks. And the several hundred page service manual! Why were selling - we bought an early 1900"s farm that has 4 buildings and a huge barn that we"re restoring, as well as 5 acres of floral and vegetable gardens around the home. In addition to the biggest reason, a baby on the way, due in December! As much as it kills me to list it, I have more important things to focus on. I hope you have the same thoughts as we did, too finish it the right way and give a special Airstream decades more of memories with your family.
