COVID NOTICE: As an essential business, we are open for you. In order to better serve our customers, we are offering free delivery of this unit up to 75 miles from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Additional miles will be charged at $2 a mile (round trip). We are also offering up to 3 months of free storage in the event that you want to purchase this unit and store it for a while. If you need to store it for more than 3 months, we charge $50 a month. - - - - Up for auction at no reserve is a vintage, partially restored and rare single axle 1962 24" Airstream Tradewind .
The Tradewind model is known for its small size and ability to get into National Parks that larger Airstreams can"t. It is distinguished from the Bambi, Bambi II, Globetrotter and Safari by its slightly larger and more spacious rear bathroom, full kitchen with a large fridge, double sink and 4 top stove, and the space for a dinette in the front (right now there is a sofa bed where the dinette could be).
With a total length of only 24 feet, this Airstream would be great for camping in national parks as it is below the length requirements. Due to its very light weight of under 3,850 pounds, practically any vehicle with a towing package can pull it comfortably.
The exterior aluminum on this Airstream doesn"t have any huge dents but does have some pitting and denting which is noticeable in the pictures. It also has the typical rock chips and dents around the lower aluminum underbelly paneling. All of the underbelly is present although there is slight damage to the side of the left front underbelly skirt (visible in pictures). This could be fixed fairly easily or left as it is. There is an opening in the front of the camper behind the propane tanks where the access door is missing (visible behind tanks). We will provide aluminum and rivets with the camper to properly cover the hole (remind us after purchase).
Overall, the body and underbelly are in fairly good shape for the age of the camper. The tires need replaced and we can help with that for $175 a tire. Several windows were replaced with plexiglass, and some appear to have aluminum tape to keep them sealed. We would suggest replacing the upper window near the entry door and the rear window near the bunk bed in the future but as of now they seem water tight. There is some aluminum tape residue that could be removed near the entry door window (was used to cover before plexiglass was installed).
Overall, the subfloor is in excellent shape and appears solid in most of the camper. The only area we noticed any wear is in the entrance, a very common place for leaking to occur. As such the door will need resealed and the floor patched. The original tile floor is almost entirely removed and adding your own vinyl or wood floor on top would be easy to do.
Onboard, there is a large futon style bed in the front (cushions missing) which would normally double as a front couch (with storage underneath), a sink in the kitchen, 4 top stove (untested) and the original refrigerator (untested). This Airstream features the very rare upper bunk bed which was an option from the factory. The wood throughout is in excellent original condition for the year, with only minimal damage near the entry way. Overall, the interior present very well. The frame is also solid with no noticeable rust other than what is typical. It was recoated by the previous owner in exposed areas and presents well.
We did not test the onboard electric and associated appliances. Also, the plumbing systems will need to be gone through but it looks in good order. It has the original Airstream propane tanks (painted). Being a 59 year old trailer, it is not perfect but it is in really great overall condition and is the ideal candidate for total restoration as a collector trailer or very nice camper for immediate use.
We do have this trailer listed for sale locally and we reserve the right to end the auction early in the event that it sells. Feel free to call Nathan at (260) 498-3415 and make an offer.
All in all, this is a perfect vintage Airstream for the enthusiast that is looking for an awesome camper or Airbnb!
