Vehicle description
My trusty Caddy! A 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup 5-speed complete with a 1.9L diesel engine swap (engine code 1Y) and Giles Performance Diesel pump. Cruise at 75 comfortably all day! Actually PASS vehicles. This truck has been a project for me over the last few years and unfortunately I now need the money more than the truck so it has to go. It cruises nicely but is still a project, so I"ll try to be thorough in my description but I am happy to respond to any questions and provide more photos etc.
- 1.9L 1Y diesel motor from Quality German Auto Parts (installed 2020) - Rebuilt Head from Quality German Auto Parts (2020)
- Giles Performance Diesel Pump with rebuilt injectors (2020)
- New alternator, glow plugs and belts all around (2020)
- New front and rear struts and strut bearings (2019)
- Rebuilt shift linkage (2019) - New front wheel bearings (2019)
The previous owner did a junky Rustoleum paint job plus roofing tape (to waterproof it I"m guessing?). The paint is flaking off and it could use a re-paint all around. From my research the interior is a mix of early Golf dash parts and GTI seats. The instrument cluster works but has a snazzy front LED light as the rear light is out. Nice stereo but the speakers are toast! The rear sliding window (pictured) has been replaced with a fixed window (not pictured). Headlights need adjusting, no horn. All lights work well!
The truck remains an ongoing project and I am all out of funds to keep going, as I am not a mechanic and have had shops do all of the work. The 1.9L motor and Giles diesel pump are worth $3000 alone. That being said it needs dialing in. The shifter needs adjusting as it occasionally grinds when going into 2nd. The truck is very hard starting in the cold and runs rough/smoky for a few minutes until warm. There is no cold start cable installed but I have one in the truck, which will definitely help! It is losing coolant fast as well, and it is hard to tell where it is going. I thought it might be a head gasket leak but the shop said all cylinders had good compression. When warm, the truck runs great. No smoke, no overheating, great power! WAAAAAYYY zippier and fun than the 1.6L diesels
There are plenty of 40-year-old vehicle quirks and I guarantee I"m forgetting a lot here. I welcome in-person inspections from prospective buyers - I am hoping to represent everything accurately but I am also not a mechanic. I
All that being said I am selling this 100% AS-IS and as a running project. Clean OR title in my name and registration is current!
