Vehicle description
Rare GERMAN (notBrazilian) 15-window 1963 Walk Thru split VW bus with Red9 suspension/extras!
With a heavy heart, I unfortunately must part ways with Greta.
Greta is a rare, 15-window walk-through VW Deluxe bus. Viewthe birth certificate to see how it was ordered (Mouse Grey, walk thru, pop-outside windows). The previous owner rescued it (see pic of it in original Mouse Grey) in the early ‘90s from transmission shop inKansas where it sat over 20 years (had a mechanics lien on it from the churchgroup that dropped it off to fix the broken trans). He restored it, but thenhardly drove it.
She has a birth certificate and M-code plate. Latter, had tosand off excess paint to see the numbers/letters.
I had big plans for Greta, but I’m moving to a new placewhere my garage space has been severely reduced. Greta is not the only vehicleI must let go of. She’s 98% rust free. Only rust that I can see is one little spotin the floor pan, and the driver’s side portion of the rear cross-member. Caneasily be patched and no need for full replacement.
It currently has no rear bumper because it was the wrong year(pointy), and I was going to go chrome anyways, which can be had for about$400. Kept the splash pans (see pic ).
Details on current drivetrain :
- 1679 (88mm pistons in a 1600) dual port bug (1971) engine
- Stock trans (not sure if it was redone); shifts fine. Wasplanning on changing out anyways for IRS
- Stock axle/RGBs. Ditto on the IRS for the Red9 suspension
Parts not installed(except where noted), but included:
- NEW, never installed, front AND rear Red9 coilover /big brake suspension kit. $$$. Shipped all the wayfrom the Netherlands! Not going to separate. 5x112 bolt pattern
- 1968 bay middle seat, but have conversion kit(w/instructions) to give it the 1963 look
- New middle seat grab handle set (1963-style)
- Rear seat is stock bottom, but New reproduction seat back
- DelMar Retro rear seat fold downkit (convert stock seat to a bed); checkout the YT video someone made!
- New Creative Engineering Clear glass, stainless frame, safari kit
- New Safari wiper pivots
- New Creative Engineering power brake booster
- New Creative Engineering remote, dual-master cylinder
- Two speed wiper motor/switch
- 1966 hazard switch
- New Custom access door for the fuel sending unit
- New VDO fuel sending unit
- New chrome vent trim (made for innie vents)
- New Flip down table w/supports
- New Front surface mount speaker modules (was going tore-locate speakers to near HL buckets)
- New Fuse mount kit. Nothing wrong w/current; just wantedmounts for modern relays.
- New Brass shifter bushing
- THREE gauge contour rings to mount the Speedhut 2 1/6” gauges in the dash
- Land Rover Discovery jump seats. Was planning on installingat least one (driver’s side) on the back of the walk-thru seat and maybe juststore the middle seat.
- New LED taillight conversion (full panel of LEDs; not justa bulb swap).
- NOS, RARE, front overrider rubberbumper cushions (see pic ).
- New Speedhut gauges: speedo / tach , volts, oil pressure.
- New DEHNE DIGITAL FUEL GAUGE and split bus mount. Good wayto replace the stock fuel gauge w/the above volt or oil gauge.
- 1967 blue relay unit. Was going to convert wiring to 1967style.
- Installed, very nice 1967 “wide” rear view mirror, new harpmirror stands, and mirrors.
- Installed Billet buttons/handles/knobs everywhere, but keptthe old, yucky plastic ones.
Current issues:
- As aforementioned, it has some minor rust (x-member andsmall spot in floor) that can easily be addressed w/o any re-painting.
- Steering is wonky. I.e. needs a wheel alignment (too muchtoe out), but was going to swap out the suspension, so didn’t worry me.
- Clock works, but a little slow. Was converted to a Mercedesclock (retained bus clock surround).
- Gas gauge doesn’t work. Was going to fix this (new VDOsending unit) when engine was going to be pulled for the IRS/Red9 install.
- Paint cracked on driver’s door (or near door)
- Turn signals a little weak. Suspect some kind of wiringissue. As aforementioned, was going to go the 1967 route. Plus the LED panelswill help a lot.
- New driver’s side wiper arm, not installed, but am missingthe blade, so didn’t install as to not want to scratch the glass.
- Passenger’s headlight JUST went out.
- Little ding on the dash near the headlight knob
