Hagerty: "History of the First Generation Buick
Riviera"
The Buick Riviera was GM"s response to the
popular Ford Thunderbird. Instantly recognized
as a design classic, the original Riviera was
Motor Trend magazine"s 1963 Car of the Year.
The svelte 117-inch wheelbase personal luxury
coupe was a pet project of GM styling head
William L. Mitchell.
Only astute Riviera fans can tell a 1964 from a
"63 at a glance (hint: check the hood
ornament). New for 1964 was the optional
dual-4-bbl, 425-cid, 360-hp "Super Wildcat
465" V-8 (At the time, Buick identified its
engines by torque rating, instead of
horsepower or displacement).
Note: NO Scams or Phishing.
I am the 3rd owner. I purchased my Riviera in
2015 from a Classic Car Museum In Las Vegas
helping with an estate sale for the 2nd owners
widow. It was in decent condition at the time
and over the next 4 years I had the original
engine rebuilt to original Specs ( I have all the
chassis and model specific Manuel’s to
reference) restored the original 12 inch finned
brakes and refurbished the paint, the 2nd
owner had replaced the carpets and generally
maintained the vehicle well. The only items left
on my list for the restoration process are the
back seats ( they need to be reupholstered, the
front seats and other interior items I was able
to save and refurbish ( LOTS of conditioner for
the front seats). I didn’t alter anything from
original Specs in my restoration efforts and not
one piece of chrome is missing. She’s a great
car and remarkably original. I drive her
Monday-Friday for a 6.5mile commute. I
received the car with 61000 miles roughly &
she now sits at 72,500 miles on the odometer.
All the mechanicals are sound. I’m sure you’ll
be as pleased with your purchase as I was 4
years ago. I smiled from Ear to Ear the
WHOLE drive back to Los Angeles for Las
Vegas!
