Vehicle description
Wonderful 1983 Vanagon campervan with 2 liter in-line motor conversion. This vehicle is registered as a Collectible Vehicle in Washington State and as such requires no annual tabs or fees.
Less than 8,000 miles on new Engine.
Three owners. In 2006 the original motor wore out, it was replaced with a TIICO engine conversion using all the parts from a South African VW. So the flat opposed wasserboxer vanagon motor was replaced with a 2 liter in-line 4 cylinder motor similar to the motors all the Rabbits, Jettas and Golfs had. That was 13 years and 8,000 miles ago and this new motor has never had an issue. More power than the stock motor, more reliable, and easier to work on.
The early Vanagons still had roll-up windows and manual mirrors so there are not $500 window motors or $300 mirrors to replace, everything is very simple and very easy to maintain. Spare tire under the front of the van and the entire nose of this van has been painted with a heavy coat of bedliner (Vanagons constantly get stone chips in the flat nose, with bedliner the stones just bounce off), this can be repaired at any time with a spray can of bed liner if ever needed. New windshield.
Dashboard:
I installed a Bosch tachometer on the dash to monitor the engine RPM"s. Installed a Kenwood stereo with 4 speakers, AM/FM/CD/AUX
There is a 12v cigarette lighter style charge port and next to that are dual USB 2.2 amp charge ports and a digital display of the battery voltage - the stereo, charge ports and display are connected to the camper battery which is seperate from the starting battery.
In the center of the dash are two flip down cup holders and a pocket for phones, glasses, etc. (The dash could use a phone mount for navigation).
Paint:
This camper was two tone light and dark blue, I just had it repainted with the factory color and the paint shop called me and asked me to confirm the location of the darker stripes. When I saw it all in the lighter color, I decided to just leave it one color as I though it looked much cleaner than the two-tone.
Wheels and Tires:
The factory 14" steel wheels have been replaced with late modle Golf Mk VI 17" "Denver" alloy wheels fitted with a brand new set of top rated Bridgestone Blizzak tires. The larger and wider wheels greatly improve the handling of the van, increases the ground clearance and due to the larger size, increases freeway speeds.
Camping Interior and pop-top:
In the early 80"s demand for the campers was so high that VW could not keep up and they contracted with a company called ASI to modify campers in the US. The main difference is that different options were available and that the tops pop straight up making the whole tent sitting height, where as the Westfalia tents only poped up at one end. All the parts are still available for these campers and there is a vibrant sub-community in the VW Vanagon community of ASI/Rivieria owners.
Standard configuration with a rear seat that folds out into a bed.
This camper has a 2 burner propane stove, propane/12v/120v refrigerator, and a rare propane heater and thermostat. All propane appliances are supplied by a tank under the van below the sliding door. The heater has a normal household thermostat, you just set it and the heater will come on and go off to maintain the heat in the van. I set it last winter and kept the interior at a constant 70F through three days of snow and used less than 1/3 of the propane.
The refrigerator can run propane for months off a single tank, can run on 12v when driving and 110vac when the van is connected to mains power via the external plug and provided cord. The sink is supplied from the on-board 15 gallon water tank or by city water pressure from a garden hose fitted to the fitting on the side and the sink has a small removable dish draining rack.
In the cabinets are several pans, a french press and hand crank coffee grinder, a cutting board and a portable propane stove if you wish to cook outside.
They interior is fitted with two batteries which are isolated from one another. The starting battery starts the vehicle and that"s it. The camper battery runs the refrigerator, all interior lights, heater, the stereo, 12v cigarette lighter charging port and USB charging ports which also display the battery voltage digitally. In this way if you are camping and run the camper battery down, the engine will still start. Once the engine has been started the vehicles alternator will first recharge the starting battery, then automatically recharge the camper battery while running. If the camper is plugged into mains power via the plug in the side, the mains power will also recharge the camper battery. It would be simple to add up to three more camper batteries if you wanted more power for longer camping without starting the motor as there is space for an additional battery in the engine bay and two more under the rear seat.
All windows are fitted with curtains which can be closed for privacy or to help keep the heat in or sun out. The curtains on the front doors also close over the windshield.
The pop up tent is water proof and has screened windows and storm flaps on all four sides. Two kids could sleep in the pop-top, or it is a great place to store gear while camping and allows you to stand up in the van. In one of the cabinets are several yards of new bug screen to repair any tears in the bog screen or to drape over the open door or rear hatch while camping.
The side of the van is fitted with a full size Dometic pull out awning. This awning can have it"s legs mounted to the van or on the ground with guy wires. Also included are two brand new matching folding chairs.
This camper has everything you could need. Parked in the snow or on a beach for a week at a time. Fresh water, heat, stove, sink and refer.
Motor and transmission:
The motor is a 2 liter VW in-line 4 cylinder motor with only 8,000 miles on it, all parts are readily available, the same mounting, oil pan and other parts were used in the diesel vans so if you ever wanted to put a diesel in, you would already have many of the parts. It is a simple motor and any VW shop will be familiar with it and it"s service - unlike a Frankenstein Subaru or Ford conversion which most shops will not touch. The transmission is a standard vanagon 4 speed manual gearbox.
Brakes:
Brand new, less than 1000 miles on them.
Rust:
No rust in this vehicle, the underside is spotless.
I reserve the right to terminate the auction before the reserve is reached for local sale.
Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer, vehicle will not be shipped until funds have cleared, I will work with the shipper and can hold the vehicle for a reasonable time until the shipper can arrange pickup.
