Grand Prix White (R4) on Tan Full Leather (88) with Tartan Inserts 4-Speed Manual Transmission Straight and Dry Chassis/No Accidents Porsche Certificate of Authenticity Many enthusiasts and historians of Porsche Turbos consider the 1978 and 1979 model years the best air-cooled versions delivered to the U.S.From 1980 through 1985, the turbo was not imported new, primarily due to more stringent emissions standards. When the Turbo returned to the States for model year 1986, it just wasn"t the same car.The light and fun natured nimbleness was gone as well as that edgy performance that either would get your adrenaline pumping or just kill you.A mere 1,200 final units were delivered to America in 1979.This is #286. This particular example was built in December of 1978 and ordered with the following factory equipment: US Equipment Limited Slip Differential Electric Sliding Sunroof Electric Exterior Mirror - Passenger Side Pirelli Tires The first owner was the late John Dixon of Dayton, Ohio.Mr. Dixon was a well-respected enthusiast and collector who ran the famed Taj Ma Garaj, which was his 23,000 square foot showroom of over 40 Porsches and other collectibles. When he passed away in August of 2013, the family continued to run the charity focused garage. While some of the bizarre and unusual pieces remained, others were carefully released to other collectors. The current owner purchased this Turbo towards the end of 2013 Shortly after, he hired Classic 9 Leather shop of Dearborn Heights, Michigan to do a new full leather interior.Classic 9 is a well-known Porsche only interior restoration shop.Over $12k was invested.A few years later, he had the car delivered to German Motors in Las Vegas for mechanical sorting. It is a well-respected specialty repair shop. The owner had the car thoroughly inspected and invested another $15,000 on the following engine-out services: Install factory ROW exhaust system (original available for additional fee) Ceramic coat exhaust system and turbo oil tank New exhaust studs Replaced turbo waste gate Replaced gaskets on valve and timing covers New crankshaft seals (front and rear) Valve adjustment Engine gasket kit Remove transmission and replace clutch/pressure plate and machine flywheel Flush and pressure test oil cooler New oil lines Rebuild and calibrate fuel distributor and warm up regulator Major service including new spark plugs, ignition wires, dist. cap, and rotor New engine mounts All of this work was performed on July 9th, 2016 at 18,400-miles.Also, the car was given a ROW/European look with the installation of very rare H1 headlights, Euro taillight lenses, and Euro rear reflectors. Recently, we had our marque expert go through the entire car and perform an inspection. He found this example to be very straight and free from signs of corrosion or damage.Furthermore, he performed the following repairs: New drive belts Oil service with period correct factory filter Hood shocks and a few exterior light bulbs Finally, we had Doctor Detail, one of the top detailer and paint specialists in the area carefully polish the exterior paint to look near new. They also performed a high-level detail of the interior, engine bay, and trunk area.In total, over $2,000 was just spent detailing this example.
