Vehicle description
1971 Airstream Excella 500! Nearly all original!
1971 was the first year of the Excella 500 and it was the top of the line!
This is from vintageairstreamclub.com “The other big news for 1971, was the January 1971 introduction of the 31’ Excella 500. Some today might consider the Excella 500 just another trim level for the 31’ Sovereign, but Airstream called it a separate model and did not use the word Sovereign as part of the name. This new top of the line model shared common twin and double bed floor plans with the 31’ Sovereign, but differentiated itself by the quality and type of materials and systems used inside it. The name was partially derived from the plan to limit production to 500 examples per year. Given the late introduction, it is likely that far fewer 1971 Excella 500s were actually built. Used 1971 Excella 500s rarely come up for sale, which reinforces this idea. Airstream introduced the Excella 500 stating that the goal was to produce the finest travel trailer possible, without regard to price.”
This trailer is probably 90-95% original! Aside from the pull out sleeper sofa, flooring and water heater I believe the rest is original, and it all works! All the roof lights work and have 3 different brightness settings. All the original smaller lights work. The A/C works good and is cold! All the vent fans work, but one of them sounds as if it’s hitting something as it spins. The bed frame is very solid and I believe the mattress is original with a few minor dirt spots. All most all of the tambour doors roll up and down with ease. There is a couple that are a bit bent and I didn’t want to try to force them open to avoid any damage to them. There is tons of closet/storage space. Under the bed there is 3 tambour doors with storage behind them. There is no soft spots in the floor, and no leaks. The bathroom area is in good shape, all of the closets/sliding doors open and close smooth. This Excella 500 was last used around 3 years ago. Last week I pulled this trailer about 25 miles with no problems. I plugged it in and tested everything this last week. Tires are in good shape. Front tinted window cover is not attached properly, it stays on fine with the rubber clips holding it in on the bottom but the top of the visor came disconnected from the bar that holds it on. It does have a few small dents and some scratches, the worst of the dents is on the curve of the top (see picture) and it has the clear coat fade. I have not tried to polish this camper. The underside is in good shape except for one spot where the kitchen sink is located, it is separating a bit there. I can text you a picture to show (only allowed 24 pictures here) Overall this Airstream is in good shape. Keep it vintage and use it as it is? Or a GREAT candidate for a modern remodel. I have a clean clear title in my name. Don’t miss your chance for a piece of Airstream history! HAPPY BIDDING!
