Vehicle description
This ZR-1 has an automatic transmission. It was originally built for Boyd Jenkins of Shrevesport, LA. Mr Jenkins sustained a spinal cord injury while on active duty in Berlin in 1954, necessitating the need for an automatic transmission. He was active as a life-member of the Shreveport chapters of both the MOPAR Magic and RRC Corvette clubs and competitively drove hi-performance cars with hand controls. This ZR-1 has a modified 350 with NOS and a claimed 0-60 of under 4 seconds. It has a roll bar and 4 point harness. The wheels are custom from Boyd Coddington. There are only 27,000 original miles on the odometer!
The car is said to have a drag racing history but all performance related records were lost when the car went (unsold) to Mecum in 2007. You will have hours of enjoyment going through the Shrevesport Times archives recreating the cars storied past. An article about the car in the Jan/Feb 1996 ZR-1 Registry Newsletter said “… The original cams are retained, and from the deck down, the LT5 remains untouched. Shown as their feature car for the 92 SEMA show in Las Vegas, a custom 160hp nitrous system was designed and installed by NOS at their Cyprus CA headquarters . Race prepping by Custom Corvettes of Perris, CA included a six point leather covered roll cage and a four point quick release harness. . . Over the weeks. . produced progressively quicker times, until finally, a best of 10.43@133 was clocked at Carlsbad, on the bottle, slicks aired to 11lbs and open exhaust.” Jenkins drove the car in 1994 to “Thunder in Stillwater, LT5 Homecoming” at the Mercury Marine factory in Oklahoma and it can be seen in photos from this historic event. The car is street legal and has been called a ‘sleeper’ due to it"s stock appearance.
The original Monroney sticker and ZR-1 book (pizza box) is included. We believe we are the third owner after Boyd and his son (who removed the hand controls). The car runs well and has been lot driven. This ZR-1 has some paint issues on both rear quarter panels and under the passenger rear window. There is factory AC which is not functioning. The lumbar control on the drivers seat isn’t working. The NOS bottle is empty and has not been used during our ownership.
Bills Auto Sales was an seller (477 teal star rating) and a licensed VA dealership selling classic and vintage cars in Culpeper. When the business closed four years ago, the remaining 35 cars (Bills favorites) were put into storage buildings on the farm. Now Harness Grove is selling all of the remaining cars in the collection. These are not ‘barn finds’ but they will require some attention before being placed back into service. After years of inactivity we do not recommend driving any of the vehicles until all safety and suspension systems have been inspected. Transporting the cars using a truck or trailer is encouraged.
