2003 RB50 Sportsmobile Pop Up Camper w/Penthouse Top & Starcool A/C Ready to Go! V8 Automatic, Towing package.
Owner since 2015
Up for sale is my much loved Sportsmobile Pop Top Camper Van. I have the title in hand and will describe it accurately so you can buy with confidence but first here"s the full details for everyone new to Sportsmobiles.
Sportsmobile got the pop up top right many years ago and these are very high quality units that are built to last. It"s a full size GMC van so there"s plenty of room up top for two adults and unlike the Westy"s you don"t have to drop a panel and seal yourself up there – the opening stays open and you still have tons of room. Down below, every nook and cranny has some sort of storage with a table for a door and you can"t sit anywhere without finding a drink holder. This Sportsmobile is the most popular floorplan where all the seating faces front – a safety requirement for good reason in many states. With the removable 3rd captains chair, there"s shoulder belts for a total of four and lap belts for two more – all told it seats 6 including the driver. It sleeps two up top and another two on the fold out couch which is roughly queen sized.
On the road the Sportsmobile benefits from it"s highly refined GMT600 2500 (3⁄4 Ton) GMC Van Chassis. These vans go forever and are easily serviced anywhere and they go down the road like an old school Cadillac. This motor is the 4.8 liter LR4 8 cylinder that GM builds like a hot rod motor as the path to fuel efficiency instead of running four cams or other hi tech trickery. They simply built the motor to a high performance spec and if you like that sort of thing you are going to love this power train. It"ll run at highway speeds all day long and sing around through traffic in the city like a Prius when you need it to. It"s an incredible package and this is the same model Van GMC still sells today.
Also while in transit you eat all your own food and use your own soaps which is nice. You can also drop the shades and pull the built in curtain for quick conversion to your own private room. That curtain comes in handy whenever you need quick privacy but it does block the front swivel seat – so I am including the snap in wrap around wind shield curtain that also gives total privacy but fully opens up the floor plan.
Its better to have the pop up because as soon as you get an enclosed camper, you need A/C to be inside if it"s hot out and then you always need 110 power or a generator – neither of which are gong to be everywhere you want to camp. In the Sportsmobile, you can raise the lid in seconds, hang the bed panel and have a fully ventilated standing height screen room that stays perfectly comfortable with a simple fan when it gets hot. It"s great for tailgating, for day trips to your favorite hiking destination, and for extended stays whereever you like to camp.
But if A/C is your thing then you are also covered – after all there are some sweet beach and desert campgrounds out there. Sportsmobile uses the StarCool system which is both tied to the Vans" dash A/C and can run independently when the unit is plugged into 110. It"s two compressors, two sets of evaporators and condensers, and relays to route the freon depending on what mode it"s in. Going down the road you get both dash and ducted A/C for the rear passengers and when camping you get just the ducted A/C if you plugged in to shore power or a generator (not included). It all works but we rarely use the A/C while camping because we just do not find we need it.
While camping the Sportsmobile is very comfortable. The front passenger seat spins around aft and the rear sofa is properly built with a steel frame and springs. I don"t camp with the extra captain"s chair in place and instead bring along a padded step stool / tool box we converted that fits over the chair mount plate and locks in with a clip. It works great for extra shoe storage, as a spare chair around camp, as an ottoman when you are on the couch and it"s the perfect height for reaching up to the canvas for cleaning. It looks like it came from Sportsmobile.
We really feel like the Sportsmobile gives you two modes when you are traveling. . The overnight condo and the camper. You really can pull into any city, spin the captains
chair around, draw the shades, and kick back for a nights rest free of charge. No one will know you are there if you sleep down below and it"s pretty discreet even with the top
up. Condo mode also works great when you are visiting friends and family if you are any sort of allergy sufferer and have issues with sleeping in other peoples spaces or if you
just feel air mattresses are ridiculous. The Sportsmobile is great for that. The other mode is full blown camping. Set up your canopy, get out all your chairs and gear. . cook and play endlessly in the best places in the country and at the end of the day climb inside and be right at home in total comfort. It just works. It"s no small thrill too that every time you use your second car, you get flooded with memories of your favorite camping trips.
