Vehicle description
The time has come for me to part with this one of a kind Four Wheel Pop Up Camper Scout model that has been restored to fit the 1976-1980, 118 inch wheelbase International Harvester Scout Terra. Four Wheel Campers makes the ultimate off road camper that is ultra-light and built with an aluminum frame. It all started when they built campers for International Scouts in the late 1970s and early 80s. Four Wheel Campers sell new today starting at $17,000, and they are still based on the same platform as the Scout model being sold in this auction. This particular unit was manufactured in 1982.
These things are incredibly cool and rare, and this one is ideal because it can be easily installed and removed from your Scout Terra. I bought this unit in 2010 and spent six months on the restoration, modifying it to function as a slide in camper instead of one that must be permanently affixed to a Scout. You can learn all about the restoration/build here (you’ll need to register on the forum to view the photos). If you are interested in touring two-tracks and getting off the beaten path, you aren’t going to find a more useful camper than this unit. It is rock solid and will enable you to go all of the places a Scout can go, yet still enjoy the comforts of a camper. Countless parts have been replaced, inside and out. The tub is built out of ¾ ACX plywood on the front and sides and pressure treated 3/4 inch plywood for the floor. The interior has been finished with real birch hardwood cabinets and siding. Built into the cabinets are two drawers, a cupboard, a sink with electric faucet, and a propane two burner stove. The new counter-top is finished with Formica and the floor is finished with linoleum. The passenger wheel well area and cabover bed area are carpeted. The faucet is electric and draws from a water storage tank. The original Four Wheel Camper and Scout decals have been reproduced and replaced. The metal portion of the camper is framed with aluminum, which is why it is lightweight. Also included is an exact reproduction Four Wheel Camper roof rack that has not been installed. Since being restored, I have only used the camper about six times. It has been parked inside my garage since the restoration was finished, and it is in every bit as good of condition as when it was rebuilt. I hate to see it go, but I just don’t have a need for it anymore because we bought a cabin in 2013 and I stopped using it. The camper is very nice, but not perfect. There is one small crack in the sheet metal on the front passenger roof corner that has been repaired. The headliner and soft side material for the pop up are original and show their age, and would need to be replaced to make this unit show quality. Four Wheel Campers still makes these parts for Scout campers and they will ship them to your doorstep. This camper is also set up to add a thermostat controlled furnace, but I chose to use a portable buddy heater instead.
Please note that the auction is for the camper only. The Scout Terra shown in the photos is not included in this auction. Buyer must pay a $500 deposit within 24 hours of purchase. Camper must be picked up within 30 days of purchase. View my feedback and bid with confidence to own a unique part of history. You will not find a nicer or cooler Scout camper. Please contact me if you have any questions. Fits all 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1980 International Harvester Scout Terra models.
