“We are considering thinning out our collection of vintage buses. This remarkable Flxible is an original "survivor" in very, very good condition. As they say, "You can restore a vehicle over and over again, but it can only be original once!" The interior is almost perfect. The body is excellent. Always a West Coast bus, so no rust issues. And the bus runs and drives very well. This is a ten day ad. If it doesnt sell by the 11th day, it goes off the market.”

Vehicle description

64 Flxible
Flxible Co of Loudinville, Ohio, started in business in 1913, building motorcycle side cars. In the 1920"s they branched out into building Funeral cars and Ambulances. Buick straight eight 320 Cubic Inch engines powered most Flxible vehicles, including buses, up through the mid 1950"s. Charles Kettering, a GM executive, was also a major player in Flxible Industries, and as they developed into a major player in city and transit buses, after WW II, GM components were heavily used in the buses. By mid-century, Flxibles developed a reputation for outstanding reliability and eye popping good looks.
As diesel power took over the market, it was only natural that Flxible would turn to their "partner", GM and utilize the now legendary Detroit "Jimmy" 2 stroke diesel engines. And, in 1960, they came out with their "New Look" body style, which became an instant best seller. The "New Look" transits were a big part of their success from 1960-1978. This 1964 "New Look" is one of the last surviving examples of these gorgeous buses. This particular "Flx" is a 40 foot, top of the line, highway coach, with individual chairs, finished in simulated leather, and has AIR CONDITIONING, a Detroit 6V71 diesel 2 stroke "wailer" engine, and a smooth 5 speed manual transmission. Originally purchased new by the Atomic Energy Commission near Seattle. Later in life, it found its way to Southern CA, and has NO rust through issues. A substantial part of the bus is aluminum, which helps as well. The bus is pretty much original, and was fully serviced when parked, 5 years ago, It has been started and driven enough to stay fresh and completely reliable, and is stored under cover. It is California registered and plated, and is not under the auspices of the California Air Resources Board, since it"s too old to get on their "radar". The air conditioner is operated by a side mount Perkins diesel, which runs perfectly. The freon has gradually seeped out of the system during storage, but I am confident it wili blow cold, again, with a recharge. We have access to vintage freon types if you need help. All tires are in virtually new. All systems are sound and usable, and I"m confident that this old girl could traverse the USA if asked. If you buy her, we will have her checked over thoroughly at our expense (at the world famous J&R Diesel Detroit Specialists in Riverside, CA), and make any reasonable repairs needed to assure a good trip home.
It is our desire that she be bought by a purist collector, since she is extremely rare and a very signifigant part of bus history. We will consider selling her to a converter, if we are assured it will be a high end, professional conversion. Our main concern is that this Flx stay beautiful and live on into the future, to be enjoyed by future generations. Pricing is considerably below value, so it"s not "Flxible" (LOL). Quick sale or no sale. Storage can be arranged at its current location for $195/month, or outdoor storage can be arranged at $125/month. If you want the bus completely detailed and polished by a professional detail shop, it would add $600 to the cost. His work is legendary.
The sound and drive of a Jimmy two stroke diesel is absolutely unique. The supercharger screams. The 2 cycle sounds like it"s running at couble speed, which creates an exhaust "wail" that causes passers by to pull out their phones and take videos. This bus causes a scene every time you park it. People have offered to pay, just to have a ride in it. Here are a few videos of the bus running, the air conditioning motor running, and one video of a similar engine bus driving, to give you an idea of the sound. doesn"t allow clickable links, so please highlight one at a time, copy it to your browser (or directly to youtube), and enjoy the videos.

My name is Al Jennings. My specialties are Crown and Gillig school buses, but this one is too good to pass up! You can reach me at 310-500-6574. The few remaining vintage collectible buses are appreciating fast. You can still buy this one for the price of a well used Toyota, and have something you"ll never get tired of. Reliability of these non-computerized buses is remarkable, and surprise!. . Many parts are fairly easy to find, since they"re mostly commercial big rig truck parts. And J&R Diesel has a HUGE inventory of many opsolete parts, and can often rebuild things you can"t replace. Maybe this is the first day of a new era in your life! Maybe the best way to spend the rest of our Covid isolation? Cruising the highways in a 56 year old vehicle that"s so beautiful, it brightens lives everywhere it goes? Vintage car and hot rod shows LOVE having old buses there! Tours with other bus collectors are awesome! Nicest people I"ve ever met. There are numerous Facebook groups for bus collectors. It"s quite an active hobby!
