M274 restored by Lance Miller MV Restorations and part of Best Vehicle Display at the 2017 Military Vehicle Preservation Association’s National Convention in Cleveland Ohio. This M274 is the first model mule. Being a 1958 it has some characteristics that later models of the M274 didn’t have. For example, the grease cups on the wheel hubs instead of the later lifting eyes, different pull start handle and guide, etc. It is powered by an original 4-cylinder engine. This model is 4-wheel drive like all others and has 4-wheel steering. The steering can be selected to only 2-wheel steering if desired. Great effort was made to represent a mule in a configuration that was actually used by the military. Meaning no so called “Commander Model” with extra added on accessory’s and parts that were never used by the military. The mule is a pull start, just like 99% of all mules that were in service. There is a hand crank if needed. The Mule was completely taken apart and rebuilt from the ground up. Below is a description of want was done with this vehicle. Along with the pictures this should give an understanding of the work and parts that was put into the restoration. I have a folder of more detailed photos of the restoration that is included with the sale. Deck abrasive blasted, epoxy primed, and painted with TM9, 2430 OD acrylic enamel. Transmission and axles torn down, inspected, any bearings or gears needed were replaced, and resealed with new gaskets and seals. Both the transaxle and front axle were government rebuilds that needed very little other than new gaskets and seals. Frame rails, axles, and most other small parts sandblasted and epoxy primed before painting. Engine was completely rebuilt. NOS (New Old Stock) parts include crank, flywheel, pistons, rings, bearings, cam, carburetor, fuel pump and governor. The spark plug wires are an expensive reproduction set made exactly like the originals. It has new spark plugs as well. All New Filters (Oil, Gas, and Air) NOS Clutch, Pressure Plate, & Throw Out Bearing NOS Brake Band NOS Drive Shaft and U-Joints New Drop Axle Boots NOS Tie Rod Assemblies NOS Gas Tank NOS Seat Back and Bottom Cushions NOS Foot Basket NOS Engine Guard NOS Tow Bar NOS Choke Cable NOS Denman brand tires NOS Mufflers All Deck covers are original The vehicle runs, drives and stops as designed. This would be a good collector’s vehicle and really should be in museum. In my opinion it is the nicest running M274 mule out there. I’ve been in the military vehicle hobby going on 40 years and I haven’t seen one of this quality for over 20 years. Just finding a running 4cylinder mule is hard enough and this one could not be duplicated now due to the scarcity of NOS parts that were used on this mule.
