Vehicle description
1953 SPARTAN TRAILER 37 FOOT DOUBLE ENDER. I purchased this trailer out of the California dessert several years ago where it had spent its earlier life. Wheel bearings were greased, and tires were replaced with new, and I then towed it to Massachusetts without a problem. It"s a big trailer, but it towed like a dream at over 80 mph behind my F350. To the best of my knowledge, this model was only sold in 1953, and was the last of the original classic style Spartans that began production in 1946. It is referred to as a "double ender" because of the wrap around "observation deck" windows that were now installed on the rear end as well. This feature made for a far more spacious sleeping compartment in comparison to the earlier fast back design. Headroom and natural light are both dramatically improved. It has been suggested that this was done by Spartan to use up the surplus inventory of end caps on hand before building the entirely new and restyled 1954 model .If you are unfamiliar with Spartans, you should know that they were created from the DNA of the Spartan Aircraft Company, then owned by John Paul Getty. In contrast to Airstreams, and almost all other travel trailers of the era, they were built to an aircraft like specification, in an aircraft factory, by a workforce of aircraft builders. The visible lines of double riveted seams give a hint of this, but to see one with the interior walls removed would make you think you were actually inside an airplane. Simply put, a Spartan makes an Airstream look like a fragile tin can.The exterior is in generally excellent condition, and should polish up to a mirror finish if so desired. The only significant damage is at the right front corner as shown in the pictures. All side window frames are intact with original glass present. Three or four show cracks. Original end gap glass is intact, with the only damage being a loose rubber seal at the right front. The roof is in good condition except for a missing vent cover above the living room and some sagging of the roof framing at this same spot. This is an easy repair. The blue, roof mounted swamp cooler was added during its earlier life and can easily be removed. The screw holes from a missing awning came filled with dabs of caulking. The interior has definitely suffered a bit as shown in the pictures. Kitchen appliances and sink base cabinets are missing, but original upper cabinets are in place. Some of the flat ceiling panels have clearly dropped, but almost all of the curved wall to ceiling panels are in excellent condition. The original bath tub and vanity are still in place, as are the bedside floor cabinets, and storage closets. This could be a fantastic tiny house or future AirBNB. It is sold with bill of sale only, as is, where is, with no implied warranty. It is for sale locally, and this auction may be ended at any time. A non-refundable deposit of $200.00 from the winning bidder is due within 24 hours of the conclusion of the auction. Pick up or shipping is entirely the responsibility of the buyer.
