Vehicle description

1974 Jeep Cherokee S that is as close to an all original survivor as you are likely to find. First year of the Cherokee, first year of Quadratrac. If you"re looking for a full-size Cherokee, you know they can be hard to find in any condition, and finding one in this condition with a factory 401 is exceedingly rare. This is an S model and features factory A/C, a clock, factory AM radio (that works!) full gauge package, premium interior with bucket seats, and more. It has original paint and graphics faded to a very nice and presentable patina. I have no way of knowing if this vehicle spent its entire life in Arizona, but I know with a fair amount of certainty it has resided in Arizona for a very long time. Simply put, you will be very hard-pressed to find one this original and unmolested, making it a prime candidate for a full restoration,or simply enjoy driving an original vehicle where just about everything still works as it left the factory. It runs and drives, transmission shifts well, and the engine runs well but has some issues detailed below.
Since acquiring the vehicle I have done the following:
Had the original gas tank boiled out and cleaned. New timing cover and timing chain New belts / hoses / tranny cooler lines
New power steering pump New HEI electronic ignition Professionally reupholstered front seats incorporating as much of the original styling as possible New molded carpet kit with upgraded backing
Newer tires Replaced one rear quarter window with automotive glass Compression check showed all cylinders 150-175
As with any original vehicle, it"s not perfect. Here are the known issues:
Engine has some valvetrain noise and shows lower oil pressure than what it should be in my opinion once warmed up (about 10-15 psi at idle). This could be due to a sender mismatch (sender was replaced by previous owner and there is a discrepancy as to which sender it"s supposed to have).
Carburetor is not original (currently a Carter AFB)
There is some typical rust in the trailing edges of the rear wheels / quarter panels (you could cover the areas with a dollar bill, see photos)
Driver front fender has been repainted at some point (see photos)
One ding in the passenger rear corner (see photos) Various other parking lot dings and scratches and faded paint typical of a vehicle this age
There is evidence of some minor leaks typical of an old Jeep Headliner is present but could use some work Factory air injection emissions equipment for the exhaust was previously removed and is missing (good or bad depending on your perspective)
A/C needs charging but compressor and blower work, and the system is currently holding some pressure Evidence of a fuel tank venting issue (tank is slow to fill) Evidence of a very minor leak at the master cylinder (new master included with sale)
Aftermarket auxiliary fuel tank is installed where spare tire would normally be and it"s not currently hooked up
Now back to the good. All gauges and lighting works. Electric rear window works (exceedingly rare!). It drives and stops well. I have verified that it"s a 401 (via numbers cast into the block near the motor mounts) and there is no indication that it"s anything other than the original engine. I closely inspected the front floorboards when I replaced the carpet and they"re all solid, exhibiting only very minor surface rust in a few spots. No rust in the rockers. The title shows box C (exceeds mechanical limits) but I found some anecdotal documentation in the glove box that seems to indicate the mileage shown is original, However, I have no way of verifying this for certain. Most importantly of all, it"s ALL THERE. All the hard to find trim pieces, all the dash components, all the things you would need if you wanted to do a full restoration and return this survivor to it"s original glory. I"ve tried to be as honest and up front as I can, hence the lengthy listing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Clean, clear title in hand.
