More and more, we are seeing the venerable A-body receive the royal retreatment when it comes to restoration, or even modification. This 1968 Dodge Dart GTS convertible was sought after, found, researched, documented, restored, and shown on the national stage. A 20-year odyssey which culminated in winning one of the realm’s most coveted prizes, Goodguys 2021 Muscle Car of the Year Finalist. If that isn’t rarified air enough, this ’68 GTS is one of only 44 drop-top 340’s to be backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. It’s also equipped with other options uncommon to a Dart, front Power Disc Brakes, Power Convertible Top, Bucket Seats, and Console-mounted Tachometer. The GG1 Racing Green Metallic is offset by the one-year-only sport stripe streaking white down each side. The woodgrain steering wheel and matching shift knob highlight dark green interior. Red streak tires shod on body color steel wheels compliment the “GTS” callouts on each fender and center point of the hood. Beautiful. How many opportunities do we have, when looking at a collector car, to buy an object of such obsession? Usually, once this much sweat equity and time has been spent on attaining near perfection, cars like these never see the light of day, let alone a “for sale” sign.

Using the App? Paste link into a browser window: [isdntekvideo] EXTERIOR Any good restoration begins with a strong car. This ’68 Dart was certainly driven and enjoyed during its life, sometimes 1,320 feet at a time. The bones were solid, so much so that it was used regularly as a cruise night car while all the necessary NOS restoration parts were accumulated. The original sheet metal, like rolled rear wheel lips, where expertly restored to their factory form rather than cut out and patched in. The entire restoration process is extensively documentation in photo albums. The mission for the body was simple- keep all the original sheet as they possibly could and make any repair work all-metal and undetectable. Mission accomplished.
With a sound foundation sealed and sanded, it was time to treat this topless beauty with a PPG basecoat/clearcoat color matched to the factory paint code GG1 Racing Green Metallic. Weeks of wet sanding ensued. The result is a body fit and finish more on par with a Buick A-body than anything Mopar produced in 1968. Imagine how many convertible Darts Dodge would have sold if they all looked this stunning on the showroom floor. Beyond the paint, the stainless trim and grill work keeps the upping the ante of awesome. Factory spec’d wheel lip and body belt moldings, dual mirrors, and body side stripes are all details typical for much pricier cars of the time but uncommon here. Locating NOS pieces to put this car back to bone stock was an act of faith and an exercise in patience. They even found the GTS specific “cross hair” grill center. A truly remarkable early production detail and correct for a car scheduled to be built on October 26, 1967. Details are important. INTERIOR The interior was also treated to a complete restoration. Everything you see is either new or completely restored to factory specifications. The factory wood grain steering wheel takes the premium impression given by the exterior brightwork and puts it solidly in your hands. You can feel it. No detail was overlooked. A sharp eye will notice that the shifter reads “HURST”. That’s because they shift smoother than the original Inland, which was relegated to keeping a box from feeling empty. All the accessories work, right down to the “knee knocker” tach.
ENGINE BAY The numbers matching, factory original, 340 4-bbl was completely rebuilt as close to factory stock specifications as possible. The factory A833 4-speed was also taken down the bare case and rebuilt to OEM specifications. A tried and true 3.23:1 Super Grip rear end completes the power train package. The engine bay is detailed out with date code correct hoses, plug wires, and belts to round out a factory correct engine assembly. And yes, it runs out strong, smooth, and certainly fast!
CHASSIS This is where most restorations fall down, leaving much money on the table and much to be desired. The floor pans are painted the proper shade of epoxy primer with body colored overspray along the rocker pinch welds. Assembly inspection marks are all present and accounted for. All of the suspension components are properly finished, weather they are bare metal, Cosmoline dipped, or powder coated. Even the exhaust system is date coded correctly. There is little, if any evidence of wear or tear to the undercarriage. With only 50 miles since the build was completed, it is easy to see why even the underside is so clean. Don’t be afraid to drive it, just have it detailed top and bottom if you ever get caught in the rain.
SUMMARY You just don’t find 1968 Dodge Darts taken to this level. NOS intensive, Concours rotisserie restored, 100% Numbers Matching, and extensively documented. It is a Good Guys national show winner, a 2021 Muscle Car of the Year Finalist. One of only 44 GTS convertibles ever produced with the high performance 340-4bbl back by a 4-speed manual transmission. Don’t miss it. There will be no “next one” to get.
