Vehicle description
Overview:
Thanks for stopping by to take a closer look at our Safari van.
Anyone who has had an Astro or Safari van knows it is the ultimate utility vehicle. It will comfortably seat 8 or, with the seats removed, sleep 2. It will also enable you to secure enough items to fill several tables at the local swap meet. With its 27 gal gas tank it will go the 400+ miles from Orange County to Ceder City, Utah. It can, moreover, tow up to 5400 lbs with addition of a hitch. The 3:42 differential ratio is also ideal for towing.
This Safari was purchased new by a passionate and obsessive owner who cataloged every service or purchase receipt and maintained a log of every purchase, service and gas stop. These documents, along with the window sticker, owner"s manual and dealer brochure will accompany the sale.
It"s being listed by a 17-year, car junkie eBayer for a family friend, the widow of original owner.
The buyer will acquire a Safari that has logged 118,272 mostly highway miles - amounting to about 6900 per year and considerably less than average. My similarly-equipped "95 Astro was showing 162K miles when I traded it in 2014. It still ran strong and had the same bullet-proof (3/4 of GM"s famed 350 ci) fuel injected engine and 4-speed (OD with lock up 4th) transmission. Others for sale show, for example, over 200K miles.
More Plusses:
My experience with the Astro leads me to pass along a number of inherent virtues: First is the security gained from sitting high with a panoramic view of surroundings and aided by fully tinted windows, power seat, express-down windows (driver and pass), overhead console (photo) and remotely adjustable mirrors. Another is the rear air conditioning which allows three couples to drive to Las Vegas in 120 degree heat in complete cabin comfort (while listening to favorite old tapes or CD"s). I also found the rear "dutch door" to be of considerable value. The hatch can be opened separately to access the cargo area and can be augmented by fully opening the dutch doors by manually releasing the stops - allowing access to the full width and height of the cargo area.
Another plus is the $3225 list of amenities provided by the SLE package. Not previously mentioned are body side cladding, roof rack, illuminated sun visors, AM/FM with CD/Casette player and rear window defogger.
One source indicated GM"s original plan was to end production with the 2002 model, but continued the offering until 2006 due to brisk sales.
Another noted that for 2003 16", 6-bolt truck wheels were added along with 4-wheel disc brakes.
All paint is original; body, as expected from lack of "rust belt"s" salty roads, is rust free and all electrical and mechanical systems perform as intended - making it a truly "no excuses" offering. Tires, BTW, are Goodrich Radial TA"s with about 50% remaining tread life. $179 Delco battery was replaced fairly recently. Attached Auto Check report gives it an "off the scale" rating of 64 (avg high is 39). Also shows it has consistently passed California"s stringent emissions tests - as recently as 4000 miles ago.
Overall, it"s an engaging vehicle to drive - given the comfortable seats with fold-down armrests and makes an excellent touring car with plenty of room for whatever you take or pick up along the way. In my case it transported the wife and I home from a 10K mi trip that included Atlanta, Bismarck and Cody along with a Singer treadle sewing machine, a hand-caned rocker, some old Ford Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels and three old Ford radiator shells.
Buying/Bidding Considerations:
This is a 10-day auction format with an initial bid of $1000 and a modest reserve. In fairness to all, the auction will run its full course. High bidder exceeding the reserve will be responsible for $500 non-refundable PayPal deposit within 24 hours and payment in full within 7 days. Title will be released when payment instrument"s viability is confirmed (cash always works!). Seller, if required, will cooperate with transport company - to be selected at buyer"s expense. Seller, however, reserves the right to end the auction at any time for any reason.
Despite the compelling description and photos, there is no substitute for personal assessment and advanced arrangements for inspection can be readily made. Before you bid, be satisfied this vehicle completely meets your expectations. Questions are encouraged and will be promptly answered.
This vehicle is currently licensed (CA registration valid to 4/21) and insured with clear title in hand. Stay well and enjoy this April day on our beautiful planet!
