2003 BMW 540i 6-speed manual
Full OEM M-Technic body kit and M-tech II suspension
This is arguably the most desirable non-M5 E39. While doing my research before buying this car, I narrowed down the VIN to the last weeks of the E39 production run. As far as I remember, this car has all the options offered for the 2003 model year. Plus, I bet you’ve never seen one of these in silver!

Fully stock except for exhaust and suspension (more on that below).
Located in the Washington DC area, convenient to DCA, IAD, and BWI Airports.
I am the third owner. The first owner bought the car in Washington state where it spent the majority of its life, before he moved it to Colorado. Then the car was acquired by the second owner who brought it to Maryland. I am the third owner and I’ve owned and loved this car for almost four years. Each owner has been a huge BMW enthusiast. I am in the process of moving to TX so I’m putting this ad out as a feeler; if I can sell it for what it’s worth then I’ll let it go, otherwise its coming with me.
When I purchased this car, it had around 110k miles on it and I spent approximately $7,000 to address current and preventive maintenance. The large ticket items were:
- BC Racing adjustable coilovers with Swift springs (8k/6k). I then had RRT Tuning dial in the suspension to mimic the OEM sport suspension ride quality, but about 0.75-1.00” lower all around.
- Continental EXTREMECONTACT DW XL tires.
- New front rotors and dust-free pads (don’t recall the brand, but they weren’t cheap). Brake fluid flush.
- Rebuilt VANOS units from DrVanos. While replacing the VANOS, all the gaskets, seals, and other minor wear and tear items were replaced. The valve covers were powder coated.
- Full suspension refresh including all control arms (upper and lower), sway bar links, and other minor parts.
- AC recharge and new AC condenser fan
- Took care of Takata airbag recall
There was a lot of other minor maintenance and repairs when I bought the car and during the past few years, but the list above should give you a general idea. As it sits at 130k miles, the car is 100% reliable and in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition. The car is completely stock except for the aforementioned coilover suspension, and a Top Speed Pro 1 exhaust (see here for details and video: https:/ topspeedauto.com/bmw-e39-m5-v8-5-0l-00-03-top-speed-pro-1-rear-section-exhaust-system/ ). The exhaust sounds great, Barry White would approve. Please note that this is a true dual exhaust and it required cutting out a portion of spare tire well to fit (noted in the photos); the body work was professionally done by the second owner who runs his own shop.
A few negatives to be aware of:
- The car drove a lot of highway miles with the first owner on the West Coast. As a result, the front end has a minor road rash that is shown in photos. It’s not serious to the point of needing paint correction.
- There are a few minor door dings, scratches and scuffs. Shown in the photos.
- No spare tire due to the exhaust.
- Some of the headliner fabric is starting to come loose on the C pillars (pictured), this can be easily fixed with the correct adhesive.
- The windshield water sprayer doesn’t work due to a snapped connector where the water line feeds into the pump motor. This is an easy and cheap fix that I’ve been putting off. I don’t drive the car in bad weather so I never had any need to clean the windshield while driving.
