Vehicle Details OVERVIEW OF 2001 HONDA INSIGHT Contents: - Summary - Technical Specification - Condition Review - General Background Summary: 2001 Honda Insight – One Owner Since New – Highly Reliable Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) 203,717 miles – Regularly Serviced – Honda-Only Parts and Fluids Good Overall Condition But Needs New Hybrid Battery Upgrades Include 2002 Civic Si Red-Stitch Alcantara-type Seats and 2002 S-2000 Steering Wheel Sony CD Head Unit Sirius XM 4-Speaker Audio System Honda Service Manuals Grid Charger Technical Specification: When new the Honda Insight was the first Hybrid car sold in the US and was recognized as the world's most efficient gasoline-powered automobile with an average fuel economy rating of 64 miles per gallon, according to the EPA, 16 mpg better than the next most efficient vehicle. Insight’s remarkable fuel efficiency was the product of several technologies. The Integrated Motor Assist (IMA™) System combined two Honda innovations: a clean-running, highly efficient, 1.0 liter, 12-valve, SOHC, 3-cylinder VTEC™-E (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) gasoline engine, which is the main power source, paired with a powerful, ultra-thin electric motor. The Insight was assembled at the Honda factory in Suzuka, Japan, where the Honda NSX and the Honda S2000 were also assembled. The Insight and the NSX were aluminum-bodied, while the S2000 had a steel body with aluminum hood. The Insight was an expensive car to produce and was not intended for high-volume sales. The car’s safety features include anti-lock braking system (ABS), side-impact door beams, dual front airbags, and seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters. The rigid aluminum body and frame met stringent federal impact protection standards to protect the driver and passenger. Condition Review: Bodywork: This Insight has never been repainted and the original paint is in good condition for its age and mileage. It was garaged at home and on workdays for 1/3rd of its current ownership and parked outdoors and garaged on workdays for the remaining 2/3rds. There have been two small incidents: A motorcyclist failed to stop in time and the motorcycle’s front tire impacted with the Insight’s rear bumper. The bumper was resprayed. The rear bumper has had subsequent parking lot contacts which have left some visible scrapes (see photos). Also, when reversing in my driveway, I scraped the driver’s door against the bumper of my other car (trust me – this was not on purpose!). While the scratch was minor, it indented the Insight’s aluminum door. I replaced the entire door with a used silver unblemished one. However, the edge of the bodywork just behind the door has a slight continuation of the scrape from that same incident (see photos). Interior: The interior is in good, mostly original condition with several comfort upgrades. I “upgraded” (quotes are to respect the fact that hyper-mileage Insight owners will object to heavier seats being considered an “upgrade” on an Insight) the seats with the attractive and more comfortable seats from a 2002 Civic Si. These seats are factory-covered with Alcantara-type upholstery and have the red stitching and red openings in the headrests. They are in good condition with some wear showing on the driver’s side but no holes or tears. I also replaced the plastic Insight steering wheel with the improved steering wheel from a 2002 S-2000 with stitching. The upgraded Sony CDX-RA700 CD/Sirius XM 4-speaker audio system looks OEM and produces remarkably good quality sound for what it is. I purchased Honda dealer extras such as the cargo net, cargo area zip-pocket storage sleeve, and a Honda-branded seat-back trash receptacle. The original, horizontal-button shift knob has been replaced with a silver/carbon vertical-button knob (that does not hit the driver in the right knee. The original knob is included in the sale). The original rear-view mirror was replaced with a mirror that includes compass direction. There are aftermarket black carpet floormats. The passenger’s side is in excellent condition but the driver’s side is worn through and discolored in the heel area below the accelerator pedal. All of the instruments and controls work as new. General Mechanical: The engine runs perfectly and has never had any issues. I have been a dealer technician and I service all my vehicles myself. This car has had oil changes with Honda oil and K&N filters approximately every 3,000 miles since new, with regular interval fluid changes, Type B plugs, brake services including rotors, pads and shoes, and wheel alignments for over the course of its 200k miles. The current tires and brakes are worn but acceptable. The car passed its annual Safety Inspection on October 15, 2021 and it is good through October 2022. There have been two non-routine maintenance repairs on the car. At approximately 150k miles, I proactively replaced both CV axles (with OEM Honda parts) as preventative maintenance. In January 2015, I replaced the original Hybrid battery with a replacement from Bumblebee Batteries, LLC. Battery: The replacement Bumblebee battery worked fine for approximately 4 years, until 2019. At that time, I purchased a Grid Charger to extend the service life of the battery until I would ultimately need to buy a second replacement from Bumblebee. However, due to the pandemic since March 2020, I am now exclusively working from home and I am no longer commuting the 15 miles to and from my office. Because the Insight is one of several cars I own and it was used primarily for daily commuting, I am no longer driving the Insight as regularly and this has had a detrimental effect on its Hybrid battery. The gasoline engine runs perfectly, but the check engine light and IMA light are illuminated and there is no Hybrid assist. If you have replaced a Hybrid battery yourself, you know this is a relatively simple procedure. But the replacement batteries are not inexpensive, per this link: https:/ bumblebeebatteries.com/products/hybrid-batteries/honda/beemax-replacement-hybrid-battery-honda-insight/?attribute_pa_model-year=2000-2006&attribute_pa_cell-capacity=standard&attribute_pa_warrantyoptions=3-year-extended-warranty-200&gclid=CjwKCAjw8KmLBhB8EiwAQbqNoF7TT0vrtipz4M5tDMjwczJvLnBbBcDpvVwEfnAWCzh2Pi_4S9_KIhoCLmsQAvD_BwE I would love to replace the battery again myself and continue owing and driving this amazing car to 300k and beyond. However, it appears now that I will continue to work from home indefinitely and I will no longer need to commute to work. I believe that if I did replace the battery again and continue not driving the car regularly, the second battery’s service life will be adversely impacted. At this point, it is best to sell the car to a new owner who will be able to use it more regularly than me. General Background: I purchased this Insight new from Honda. It has been a 100% reliable, low-maintenance car and one that fully lives up to its reputation as a nimble, sublime handling commuter car that can move through traffic and be parked more easily than most any other vehicle available. With a CVT and weight-adding upgrades, this particular car is not as attractive as a hard core, leaned-down, streamlined 5-speed if you are seeking a hyper-mileage Insight. I totally admire those types of Insights (Hello Insight Central!), but I wanted a car that was optimized for my personal commuting needs. For an owner seeking an Insight that is very comfortable for extended periods, in traffic and over long distances, this would be a wonderful car for you.
