Vehicle description
This 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 NAS, serial number 1672, one of 2799 North American Specification Defender 90 trucks built for the model year (1499 of which were soft top), features aluminum bodywork finished in Beluga Black, powered by a 6.2L LS3 V8 mated with a 6L80e six-speed auto transmission and original LT230 dual-range two-speed transfer case. NAS Defenders came with an internal and external roll cage, and this example includes three tops, including the pictured Badger Bimini top (inclusive of a tinted rear window), a full soft top, and the hard-to-find original NAS Hard top (8/10 condition, with minor cracking).
The vehicle was sold as new in Illinois and remained in the state through its acquisition by the current seller (second owner) in 2015.
From early 2016 until 2018 this NAS Defender 90 was rebuilt and modified. Once the build/modifications were complete, vehicle was moved to San Diego, CA, where it has remained since. The Carfax report shows ownership history in Illinois and Wisconsin from new. No accidents, and both a walk-around and driving video are provided below.
A good portion of mechanical components were replaced:
Vehicle frame was replaced with a black-painted galvanized frame; the bulkhead and floor footwells were replaced with the newer Puma version and paired with a new Puma Dash, outfitted with modern functioning high-powered heat and air-conditioning. Custom console and armrest were fabricated. Doors were replaced with newer full-height doors outfitted with powered windows.
The vehicle has received new stainless brake and fuel lines, new front and rear radius arms, new poly bushings, new springs, new shock absorbers, new steering linkage, new steering box, all attaching arms and brackets powder coated, and frame wiring replaced with gauge uprated silicone based wire. The electrical system has been updated with replacement fuse panels utilizing blade fuses.
Power comes from a 6.2L LS3 V8 mated with a 6L80e six-speed auto transmission and original LT230 dual-range two-speed transfer case.
Additional work included fitting 20″ Range Rover “Stormer” Design wheels, a half-length roof rack, heated Puma windshield and heated mirrors, James Bond/Puma-style “A” bar, LED lighting all around with JW Speaker high-output Headlights and LED DRL’s in bumper, and more shown in pictures.
The cabin features tweed and quilted black leather upholstery on heated and cooled Kahn front seats, a quilted rear seat, Kahn tweed and leather gauge cluster, Startech custom Land Rover steering wheel, and Mercedes-grade black carpets. Instrumentation includes a Dakota digital speedometer and a tachometer, with gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. Just under 17k miles are shown on the odometer, which reflects all since completion, all of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.
Additional sound deadening was placed throughout, and a custom-fit and fabricated Focal sound system was installed by Mid-City Engineering of Chicago, with three 10” down-firing subwoofers, driven by an Alpine iLX-700 CarPlay double-din head unit and Focal amplifier (over $12,000 invested). I must mention, this is the best sounding car-stereo I have ever owned. MB Quart waterproof speakers on roll bar, while functional, are currently disconnected to better balance the sound.
Recent service includes an oil and filter change, a coolant flush, and a replacement of the transmission (approximately 500 miles ago). Brake pads and rotors were replaced about 1,500 miles ago.
This modified Defender 90 is now offered on behalf of its current owner in San Diego with manufacturer’s literature, the recent service records, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Wisconsin title in the seller’s name.
No warranty is offered or implied. Vehicle is not guaranteed to pass California emissions or titling.
In addition to the pictured 20” wheels equipped with Toyo Proxes II’s, a set of factory Freestyle/Tornado 16″ wheels are included for off-road and winter enjoyment, wrapped in Geolander Discovery tires, while the additional 16” spare is sporting BFGoodrich All Terrains.
Other custom equipment to note:
Push-button start (touch-n-go from Bowler), keyless (and walk-up) entry, alarm (disconnected), actuator-driven lock on rear tailgate, Ron Davis racing radiator, Startech custom steering wheel ($895), Steering Guard, Land Rover Soft top, Badger Bimini top (complete with tinted back window and tonneau cover), Hard-to-find Original NAS Hard Top, Auxillary gas tank (in-line, adds about 8 gallons of capacity), Rear-view camera (currently disconnected), Optima battery
