" –Hagerty The Land Rover Defender has a 70-year history across five generations of the model. "Legendary"-too often applied to various automobile brands-is an apt description for this rugged, simple, highly capable four-wheel drive vehicle. A veteran of British military service, many an African safari, and service to celebrities from Queen Elizabeth to Paul McCartney, the Defender satisfies in a way no lesser off-road-capable vehicle really does. Across its first three generations, the Defender had suffered from one criticism: those vehicles could be uncomfortable, and so, hard to live with. The Land Rover people addressed this issue head-on with the launch of the Defender 90. "(The Defender 90) marked the first time a Land Rover utilized the coil-spring suspension from the Range Rover to replace the old cars" archaic leaf-spring design. Various quality-of-life improvements like amore comfortable interior and modernized engine lineup made tremendous strides in on-road driving manners." (Motor Trend) Alas, only a very few Defender 90s were ever allocated to the U.S. market, just 2,000 per year over a four-year run. Offered here, is a right-hand-drive Defender 90, complete with a thorough restoration, rebuilt engine, privately imported to the U.S. from South Africa in January 2021 and holding a clean Georgia title. Showing just under 12,000 miles on its odometer (since restoration), the well-earned Land Rover reputation for longevity promises many times that number still remain to be traveled, explored, and conquered. This isa very unique truck to the US given you very rarely see a D90 pick-up truck version and 2021 is the first year that trucks with the Td5 engine could be imported to the US. So I would safely say this is a one-of-a-kind! The truck"s exterior bright white paint is augmented with glossy black chequer plating in all the right places for additional body protection when you take it out for those intense off-road adventures. The paint is shiny and uniform across the body and complements the black chequer plating extremely well. Zero rust on the body including lower-door surfaces, floorboard, etc. The cab and rear are protected with a custom, heavy duty black roll bar, while black bumpers, grille-surround, mirrors, wheels, running boards, fender flares and other trim complete an impressive look and undeniable presence. The tinted cabin glass and lighting lenses are free of cracks or damage. Badges and emblems are all in place and the rear of the body features a heavy-duty bumper step, hitch and electrical connection. Out front, the tops of both fenders and the bonnet feature textured-steel anti-slip chequered plating for safe servicing during inclement weather. Inside, the black and white theme continues with an upgraded Land Rover dashboard in white with impressive black vinyl top to match the seats. An under-dash shelf and between-seat storage box are in place. New black vinyl seat upholstery on the front bucket seats (brand new with no wear) and two rear, center-facing bench seats are in the bed. In keeping with the overall character of the vehicle, cabin floors in black are covered in easy-to-clean Land Rover branded rubber matting. The floor-mounted 5-speed manual transmission shifter and transfer case controls operate in standard fashion. Under the hood, the 2.5-liter turbocharged inline 5-cylinderTd5 powerplant resides in a very clean and tidy engine compartment. 1996 was Land Rover’s first year in using the Td5 engine designed by BMW. Many consider the Td5 as Land Rover’s best performing diesel: · Serious torque at low revs · Sounds the way a Defender engine should · Ability to stop/start, in gear, on the key on a steep off-road incline · Fabulous sound on tick over · Smooth and quiet high-speed driving · Acceleration matches modern traffic · Reliable electronics · Plenty of tuning options · Land Rover’s last in-house diesel (the Ingenium diesel doesn"t count here). There are very few of these engines in the US given 2021 is the first year 1996 built Land Rovers can be imported. All components are in place and properly mounted. The vehicle"s undercarriage is similarly tidy with only minor signs of surface rust on some untreated surfaces. There is no indication of suspension or exhaust-system damage. All data tags are in place. The sound condition of this Defender 90 is faithfully presented in the numerous high-definition photographs together with a short walk-around-and-startup video. That said, there is no substitute for an in-person, up close inspection. We encourage such inspections by interested parties in the NC area The group marketing director of Jaguar Land Rover once put it this way: " Defender is the epitome of toughness, of ruggedness, and of strength and most importantly, of capability ." We"d call that "truth in advertising."
