" –Hagerty The Land Rover Defender has a 70-year history across fivegenerations of the model. "Legendary"-too often applied to variousautomobile brands-is an apt description for this rugged, simple, highly capablefour-wheel drive vehicle. A veteran of British military service, many anAfrican safari, and service to celebrities from Queen Elizabeth to PaulMcCartney, the Defender satisfies in a way no lesser off-road-capable vehiclereally does. Across its first three generations, the Defender had sufferedfrom one criticism: those vehicles could be uncomfortable, and so, hard to livewith. The Land Rover people addressed this issue head-on with the launch of theDefender 90. "(The Defender 90) marked the first time a Land Roverutilized the coil-spring suspension from the Range Rover to replace the oldcars" archaic leaf-spring design. Various quality-of-life improvements like amore comfortable interior and modernized engine lineup made tremendous stridesin on-road driving manners." (Motor Trend) Alas, only a very few Defender 90s were ever allocated tothe U.S. market, just 2,000 per year over a four-year run. Offered here, is a right-hand-driveDefender 90, complete with a thorough restoration, rebuilt engine, privatelyimported to the U.S. from South Africa in January 2021 and holding a cleanGeorgia title. Showing just under 12,000 miles on its odometer (sincerestoration), the well-earned Land Rover reputation for longevity promises manytimes that number still remain to be traveled, explored, and conquered. This isa very unique truck to the US given you very rarely see a D90 pick-up truckversion and 2021 is the first year that trucks with the Td5 engine could beimported to the US. So I would safely say this is a one-of-a-kind! The truck"s exterior bright white paint is augmented withglossy black chequer plating in all the right places for additional bodyprotection when you take it out for those intense off-road adventures. Thepaint is shiny and uniform across the body and complements the black chequerplating extremely well. Zero rust on thebody including lower-door surfaces, floorboard, etc. The cab and rear areprotected with a custom, heavy duty black rollbar, while black bumpers,grille-surround, mirrors, wheels, running boards, fender flares and other trimcomplete an impressive look and undeniable presence. The tinted cabin glass andlighting lenses are free of cracks or damage. Badges and emblems are all inplace and the rear of the body features a heavy-duty bumper step, hitch andelectrical connection. Out front, the tops of both fenders and the bonnet featuretextured-steel anti-slip chequered plating for safe servicing during inclementweather. Inside, the black and white theme continues with an upgraded LandRover dashboard in white with impressive black vinyl top to match the seats. Anunder-dash shelf and between-seat storage box are in place. New black vinylseat upholstery on the front bucket seats (brand new with no wear) andtwo rear, center-facing bench seats are in the bed. In keeping with the overall character of thevehicle, cabin floors in black are covered in easy-to-clean Land Rover branded rubbermatting. The floor-mounted 5-speed manual transmission shifter and transfercase controls operate in standard fashion. Under the hood, the 2.5-liter turbocharged inline 5-cylinderTd5 powerplant resides in a very clean and tidy engine compartment. 1996 wasLand Rover’s first year in using the Td5 engine designed by BMW. Many considerthe Td5 as Land Rover’s best performing diesel: · Serious torque at low revs · Sounds the way a Defender engine should · Ability to stop/start, in gear, on the key on asteep off-road incline · Fabulous sound on tick over · Smooth and relatively quiet high-speed driving · Acceleration matches modern traffic · Reliable electronics · Super-high mileage is not an issue, internalwear is negligible · Plenty of tuning options · Land Rover’s last in-house diesel (the Ingeniumdiesel doesn"t count here). There are very few of these engines in the US given 2021 isthe first year 1996 built Land Rovers can be imported. All components are in place and properlymounted. The vehicle"s undercarriage is similarly tidy with onlyminor signs of surface rust on some untreated surfaces. There is no indicationof suspension or exhaust-system damage from too-aggressive driving. All datatags are in place. The sound condition of this Defender 90 is faithfullypresented in the numerous high-definition photographs together with a shortwalk-around-and-startup video. That said, there is no substitute for anin-person, up close inspection. We encourage such inspections by interestedparties in the NC area The group marketing director of Jaguar Land Rover once putit this way: " Defender is the epitome of toughness, of ruggedness, andof strength and most importantly, of capability ." We"d call that "truth in advertising."
