The Miata R Edition was a special factory package that was intended for buyers who were interested in racing or no compromise street performance. The only option was air conditioning, which this one has. Total production in 1994 was only 1218 cars making this Miata one of the rarest editions. To keep weight down the R Edition was only available with manual roll up windows, manual steering, and cloth seats. The differential is a limited slip Torsen. Suspension is upgraded above the base model with Bilstein shocks, shorter springs, and larger sway bars. The shorter springs make the car both lower and stiffer. Body add-ons included both front and rear spoilers. Alloy wheels were standard. The red Miata badge on the trunk may be for limited edition cars only. I"ve only seen black ones on base models. The October 1994 issue of Car & Driver magazine compared the performance of the R model to an M edition. "The suspension glows on the track, where the R is 2.6 mph faster in the emergency lane change and an even more impressive 4 mph faster through the slalom. Grip is up, too: 0.86 g for the R versus 0.83 for the M Edition. What"s startling is that the R performs these feats on the same Dunlop tires as the standard Miata wears". This particular car has 123K well cared for miles. It is all original except for tinted windows and powder coated wheels. The top was recently replaced and the rear window is now glass (which is much more durable than the original plastic one). It has no damage history and was never raced that I know of. I purchased the car in 2014 with 90K miles and it has needed nothing beyond routine maintenance since I"ve owned it. The last service was at 121K miles and included an oil/filter change, new "Stoptech" brake pads, and a new Panasonic sealed battery. The car was previously used for my daily commute (freeway miles) and consistently got 32 MPG. It gets limited use now that I"m retired. Time for it to find a new home!
