“This rare Defender110 2 door is an Ex-Military Of Defense unit that has been mechanically restored at some point and appears to be an example of the British Military's Project Tithonus. It's current condition as a running, driving truck with no signs of neglect or poorly added "upgrades or accessories" - IE a clean and solid base point for a new owner. There are signs of surface rust on the hinges and some exposed areas, as well as some very typical rust on the door frames (see attached pics).” |

Mechanical service and maintenance are the best features of this Defender and a positive toward it reaching its market potential without entering into a major mechanical restoration that would often be required to achieve a top level Defender. The vehicle is best suited to a market segment that is seeking a reliable driver that is straight, suited for overland travel and daily road driving. Its shortcomings largely are related to its finish and include the poor paintwork and remediation mentioned in the reports included in this portfolio. Basic remedial maintenance to the fluids throughout the systems, attention to the cooling system, engine tune service and suspension and brakes would result in a solid, presentable and appealing Defender.
Perhaps the best attribute for this particular Defender is that it was by all appearances, part of Project Tithonus and has benefitted from the mechanical and preservation steps taken during that refurbish process. There is a strong market for this particular type of Defender
LAND ROVER DEFENDER 110 TITHONUS A Tithonus Project Defender 110 is different in many ways from the usual unrestored vehicles available in the US. These Defenders were put into service with the British Army when new and maintained for reliable use while in service. During the late 2000’s, the most solid of these vehicles went through the British Ministry Of Defense (MOD) ’s Project Tithonus in order to extend the useful and reliable life of the MOD fleet. Work included a comprehensive overhaul, choosing the best Defenders already owned by the MOD. Vehicles that failed to make the grade were sold into the marketplace. Project Tithonus was a cost-saving measure by the MOD. It had a requirement to only use vehicles that were up to current health and safety standards. Therefore instead of purchasing a new fleet of vehicles it chose to refurbish the best of the existing stock. This refurbishment made the vehicles fit for long term service and conform to then current health and safety standards for at least another 10 years. The refurbishment included: · complete bare metal respray of body and chassis · fitting of new Wolf style composite hard top · fitting full Wolf roll-cage · new seatbelts front and rear · new updated front Exmoor Trim seats with Outlast water proof and durable fabric · new folding Exmoor Trim rear seats with seatbelts · new rubber sound proofing matting front and rear · new Wolf wheels · New upgraded brakes…(Front disc brakes on many) · new Michelin or Goodyear tires 7.50R16 · engine refurbishment 2.5 Ltr Diesel and 5 speed LT77 gearbox and transfer case · checker-plate to hood, fender tops and sills There are NO typical Land Rover dents and the chassis on these Defenders are typically in excellent condition. There was no bulk-head rot or foot well rot at the time of choosing, as can be found in other and even in much newer Defenders. They drive with no unusual clunks and bangs, no whines on the gearbox or axles and gearbox is smooth, engines typically fire up straight away.
