Vehicle description

1985 Mercedes 300TD. 155,000 miles, It is hard to find these with this kind of mileage, most are in the 200,000+ range, if you are looking at this auction you know these last forever, widely regarded as one of the best, most durable, reliable cars ever made. Clean original examples of these are bringing a lot of money and it is getting harder to find good project cars at a realistic price. I am a car hobbyist and enjoy playing with and restoring classic cars
I got this from a dealer friend a couple years ago, I had an RV he wanted and being a dealer he had to work a couple cars in on trade. I would really love to keep this, restore it to what it should be and enjoy it for years but I have too many projects and need the space so I have to get rid of a few cars, the title is still in his dealerships name to make for an easy transfer.
This is a low mileage car, around 155,000 miles, I put a new battery in it the other day after being in storage for a few years and it started immediately, not even several cranks or several seconds but immediately, I was shocked, old Mercedes are amazing!
I haven"t driven it except in and out of my shop so I can"t say anything about it other than the fact it does run, drive and stop.
Now the bad, this is strange, it is a Texas car which usually means rust free but this car has several rust areas which I have noted in the photos.
Each rear quarter panel at the bottom rear corner of the rear window (both sides) has a small rust spot (apparently common on these), There is also some rust at the rear wheel well on each side, I assume it leaked from the window corner and ran down to the space behind the rear wheel and eventually rusted the rear wheel wells from the inside There is also a small amount of rust where the 3rd row seat bottom screw into the trunk floor.
Also a small area in the rear seat footwell on both sides.
These are all really strange, the car has not been driven in about 13 years, I am guessing it was stored outside, that would explain the clear coat being gone from most of the car and if the door and rear hatch seals leaked that would explain the rust spots in those few places.
I removed the carpets to show these spots, some of them I threw away, they were dirty and moldy and not worth keeping, good used ones are easy to come by.
I want to make it clear, this is not a really rusted car, the undercarraige is clean, there is not rust at the bottom of the doors or rear hatch, it is not like a nothern car car driven on salty roads, it just has several strange rust spots that need attention, all of them are pretty easy fix and should not be a problem once repaired.
The interior needs the passenger seat recovered, it is leather and is dry rotted and cracked, the rear seat is also leather and has one tear, might be repairable. The drivers seat has apparently been replaced, it is MB Tex and still in pretty good shape. The door panels are all good, the glass is good.
The car has A/C but I haven"t tried it, don"t know what else works or doesn"t but if you have any questions let me know and I will see what I can find out.
This car has great potential, parts are easy to find and not too expensive, mechanically it shouldn"t need much, this is too good of a car not to be restored
