Vehicle description
1984 Volkswagen Rabbit L. One original owner car. used for summer use only, No NY winters ! This car was purchased in early 1984 and was used for summer driving and then slowly modified for track day and autocross use. The car is riding on Eibach progressive springs with Koni racing struts in the front and Tokico Gas 5 way adjustable gas shocks on the rear . The car has Suspension Techniques front and rear anti sway bars. Techtonics upper and lower tie bars stiffen the front end. The engine is the original 1.7 Carburated engine with a ported and polished head, G Grind cam driven by an adjustable cam gear and a Weber DGV 2 Bbl carburetor replacing the original single bore carburetor. The head is studded with Raceware engineering head studs and topped by a CB racing valve cover. Exhaust flows through a Techtronics header into a Techtronics exhaust system. Power flows through a GLI 16V clutch and 5 speed close ratio transmission using custom axles, studded wheel hubs and refinished GTI wheels on 5 new Dunlop Direzza Z11Star Spec tires
Unlike many track day and Auto X cars this car had street driving comfort to be the most important consideration. In the years it took me to put this car together in the last 36 years. The car still uses rubber bushings in the suspension, The spring and shock combination have been tuned for an excellent balance between outright performance and comfort The exhaust has a very nice note but is not loud or wearing on the driver. The 1.7 engine with its small valves gives excellent low end performance and easy drivability in normal traffic conditions, The cars sweet spot is 3000 to 5000 RPM.
The interior is in very good condition and has just received a new headliner, There is normal wear and tear but for its age it presents very well. The exterior is also in very good condition, The pictures do not show the paint flaws well, The car wears mostly original paint that has been hand rubbed so many times the paint is very thin, on sharp body lines there are places the paint is worn very thin. I also in the early years I took the car to have the paint touched up when a stone chipped the car or door was dinged. Today these places are clearly visible. The right front fender was replaced in 1996 after I backed my snow plow into the fender when the car was parked in my storage building. I was never able to match the factory trim
The car is wearing factory European bumpers, custom mirrors, factory GTI air dam and Hella H4 headlamps and Hella air horn. The car comes with a file including the brochure, build sheet, owners manual, original keys, window sticker and many receipts.
I have probably forgotten a few details and may update this description as I see fit
