Vehicle description
PLEASE READ:
Please no trades or low-ball offers. I"ve kept this car in storage for 3yrs & I"ll keep it another 3yrs rather than give it away. The car is also for sale locally, so listing may end at any time. It is not currently driveable, see below.
Up for sale is a 1981 VW pickup, 1.6 diesel engine, 5sp manual trans. Actual mileage unknown (this isn"t the original engine & trans anyway). I"ve owned this car for 13yrs, and for 10yrs it was my daily driver getting around 40mpg on diesel, B100 biodiesel or vegoil. It has been in storage the past 3yrs but I"ve rotated the full tank of regular diesel out every year and started it once in a while. It started right up today with no effort & runs smooth. I"m selling it because I bought an electric car.
The good:
- Greasecar vegoil conversion kit ($1500 new). I"ve recently cleaned out the (heated) vegoil tank and replaced all the viton fuel hoses.
- New cylinder head ($700), injection pump ($700), injectors ($200) and glow plugs. None of these new parts have yet been used with vegoil, so if that"s not your thing, then just run it on diesel.
- New complete cooling system: radiator, water pump & all hoses.
- New front CV axles, new front struts/springs and new rear gas shocks, rear 2" add-a-leaf.
- Fiberglass cap in good shape, that opens sideways like a clamshell for large loads.
- Comes with many spare parts including decent pair of CV axles, front struts/springs, spare tire, others.
- Vegoil processing equipment: Home-made 50gal cone-bottom electric heater/dewaterer (pic), with brand-new centrifuge filtration system from Pennsylvania Biodiesel, never installed (this was around $750). I can also include 75gal of unfiltered vegoil in cubes if desired.
- Local delivery of car and processing system on my flatbed trailer negotiable for additional charge, within 100mi. Obviously requires complete payment beforehand. Otherwise I will assist with loading but buyer is responsible for transportation.
The not-so-good: PLEASE READ: The car will need to be moved on a flatbed trailer, because:
- The parking brake cables have rusted, so that the rear tires turn too stiffly to drive. Comes with a new pair of parking brake cables.
- The tires are old & cracked from storage. They hold air but need to be replaced.
- The body is overall in good shape with no major issues. Painted with black spray-on bedliner. There"s a small rust hole in the driver"s floor about the size of a dime that I removed the carpet to fix, but never got around to it. Carpet did not survive removal though.
- The interior is rough. No carpet, no headliner. Smells musty from storage. Dash has a new dash pad, so it looks good.
- There"s a leak in the hardline to the rear brakes, so the master cylinder will eventually run dry.
All in all, it"s been a great little truck for me, just needs some attention around the edges.
