One of 8,931 Versailles models made in 1978 First production vehicle to offer halogen headlights and clearcoat paint Diamond Blue exterior (code 38), full Valino vinyl roof (code V2) and Wedgewood Blue leather and vinyl interior (code TB) Windsor 302 CID V-8 engine (code F) Ford C-4 three-speed automatic transmission (code W) and 2.50 gearing (code 1) Air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power sideview mirrors, power locks and power front seat Sold from an estate with same previous owner since 2012 (10 years) with mileage showing 36,561
Almost forgotten today from the pantheon of 1970s cars is Lincoln’s Versailles. It represented Lincoln’s answer to Cadillac’s Seville as the two fought to attract the attention and pocketbooks of younger luxury buyers who found Mercedes-Benz and BMW vehicles more to their liking.
This car was made in Ford’s Wayne, Michigan factory (VIN code W) in April 1978 then transported to the St. Louis, Missouri sales district.
Dressed in Diamond Blue paint (code 38) with a Wedgewood Blue full Valino vinyl roof (code V2) that is in overall excellent condition. The car’s bodywork is straight and the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. The car had been garage kept and presents well with minor blemishes.
The car rolls on brand new white stripe radials, at all four corners. Each one is mounted on a steel wheel and a factory wheel cover.
Under the hood is a Windsor 302 CID V-8 engine (code F) mated to a Ford C-4 three-speed automatic transmission (code W) and backed by 2.50:1 gearing (code 1). Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power sideview mirrors, power locks and power front seat. A/C blows, but not cold.
Inside, the Wedgewood Blue vinyl and leather interior is in overall very good order. The front and rear bench seats look great while the matching carpet and headliner are in satisfactory order. The two-spoke steering wheel wears some wood veneer to separate it from the regular wheels found in related Mercury and Ford models. The inner door panels and dashboard are in very good condition. A column-mounted shift lever and a factory AM/FM radio round out the interior.
Ford saw the success General Motors had three years earlier with their new compact luxury sedan, the Cadillac Seville, and sought to replicate that achievement with the Versailles. However, Ford did not have the same level of revenue that GM had to spend on such a car. The Seville looked like a new car but underneath it was a modified version of GM’s everyday X-body compact car – the Chevy Nova, Olds Omega, Buick Apollo and Pontiac Ventura.
Competition to this Lincoln in 1978 included American Motors’ Matador, Cadillac’s Seville, Chrysler’s LeBaron, Mercury’s Monarch and Toyota’s Cressida.
