Vehicle description

Considering its inherent qualities, this car has the potential to be almost immortal. It is a goddess! However, I live in San Francisco and have enjoyed driving this amazing car since 1991, and due to increasingly strict smog regulations, it no longer can pass California"s smog regulations.
There are important considerations you need to assess before purchasing this hard-to-find car:
1) This car now requires some carburetor and possibly engine work, as the car has been tinkered with over the last two months- in attempt to have it pass smog. (Should you wish to buy and use it in California, I have been told that a thermal reactor system may be needed to be added for it to pass smog regulations. Alternatively, the car can be taken out of State where it can be easily registered, for California"s smog regulations are the strictest in the nation.)
2) The car shall need some tender loving care to be restored to its former state of head-turning beauty but it has already been prepped (that is, sanded and bonded); so it is actually ready to receive a coat of paint! It"s hood, trunk, and driver"s door have all been upgraded and replaced.
PPG of San Francisco sells Malaga, the original BMW 2002 purple-colored paint, wholesale, as well as a full range of other, high quality paints. (Their phone number 415.863.7235.) Double 02 salvage of Hayward sells all kinds of parts for the vehicle and it ships nationwide. (They are a reputable and fairly priced, used car parts company and their phone number is 510.782.2002.)
3) As far as repairs most of them are located in the car"s interior: the heater, odometer, and speedometer need replacing; the windows" rolling down mechanism needs work and the mechanism that squirts windex onto the wind-shield fails to splurt; there had been some leaking from the tubules/roof and the ceiling had been open to get access to them and clean them. (N.B. the sun roof has been repaired in the past year and opens well and the roof did not leak during the last rain storm). The seat belt is a bit shorn but still usable, the seats are cracked, and there are some cracks in the dash board. The bumper rubber casings and the back brakes also require some work.
4) Some of the light casings are cracked. This past year this work has been done on the car: 3 tune ups in an attempt to get it to pass smog ($1000); replaced clutch and installed new bushings; resealed engine to ensure no leaks ($2700); replaced hazard light and other lights ($183); replaced radiator (~$500). While I do not know the exact mileage on the engine, it is a rebuilt one.
Should you be seriously interested in the car, you need to accept and sign the papers that you are buying the car "as is". (This is the only legal way to transfer title in California, when a car fails to pass smog.)
I love this car, on account of its charm, its being so much fun to drive, and its being so well made: I feel much safer in its steel body, than in the newer, tinier, plastic cars.
Before the smog work, the car was peppy and ran well. I am very, very saddened that I now need to relinquish it, so I want it to go to the right person, who will be intentional and know its value.
If you are interested, please feel free to call me at (415) 595-0353. (N.B. As I am posting this car locally as well, I am not obligated to sell this car via this eBay advertisement- should it sell before via another site.)
