POWERTRAIN The OM617 3.0-liter five-cylinder diesel engine was recently serviced and starts and drive well with no notable mechanical issues. Rated at 79 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 127 pound-feet at 2,400 rpm when new, the naturally aspirated inline-five’s unmistakable mechanical clatter broadcasts the sound of personality and character. It also tells the story of an engine renowned worldwide for it durability and longevity. The Mercedes-Benz four-speed automatic transmission is said to perform well. Oil seepage is noted underneath the engine and the rear differential shows evidence of leaks. CHASSIS The competent underpinnings of Stuttgart’s renowned W115 chassis rely on the double-wishbone front suspension and a semi-trailing arm independent rear axle to provide a supple ride as well as nimble handling. On this 1975 300D, some surface rust is noted on the suspension components and fasteners that appears to be cosmetic in nature, unaffecting the functionality of the vehicle. All suspension and brake components are original and have not been serviced since the vehicle was placed in storage in 1990. EXTERIOR Featuring the iconic three-box shape of Mercedes-Benz’s mid-20th century design language, the Astral Silver finish was re-applied under previous ownership prior to 1990. The paint is noted as having check cracking in several areas and has a shiny finish. All exterior trim, glazing and brightwork is said to be original and in good condition. The bottom of the rear quarter panels exhibit bubbling under the paint. The factory 14-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers are wrapped in older tires that are in need of replacement. INTERIOR The Black MB-Tex interior includes manually adjustable front bucket seats, power windows, veneered wood trim and a large four-spoke steering wheel that sits in front a gauge pack that measures oil pressure and coolant temperature, in addition to the standard speedometer. The odometer currently indicates 82,632 miles. It is also equipped with air conditioning that needs to be serviced. A gated floor-mounted shifter for the four-speed automatic transmission provides both aesthetic and tactile gratification. Tthe interior is free from any stains or sun damage.
