Vehicle description
Up for auction is this amazing 1968 Plymouth Hemi GTX. Plymouth called the GTX "The Boss" in its advertising and this one is definitely that, coming from the factory with the optional 426 Hemi 425 horse engine, 4 speed transmission and dana 60 rear axle. It is truly amazing because it was originally sold new in Tempe, Arizona and enjoyed a dry climate for most of its early life. That, coupled with the fact that Plymouth only produced 217 Hemi 4 speed GTX"s in 1968 make this the one to own. Currently, It has had the same owner for over 20 years and includes a 4-page history of the car written by the previous owner which traces it back to its original Arizona roots. This is not a sewed together rust bucket or a clapped-out race car, this GTX is very rust free, has never been tubbed, "roll bar"d" or professionally raced. It has all its original fenders, doors, hood, trunk lid, quarter panels and even trunk and floor pans still in it. All this is documented with the many pictures of the restoration which are included with the car. The engine and transmission are dated correctly for the car and are believed to be the original ones (Chrysler began stamping VIN numbers on the motor/trans units sometime in late 1967; so some 1968 cars got them, some didn"t). The mileage is believed to be correct at just over 59,000 miles. The original build sheet and fender tag document the color & factory installed options, including power disc brakes, power steering, tinted glass, console, black vinyl top & AM radio. The car was restored back to stock with the original color (code RR, burgundy metallic) with black bucket seat interior by the previous owner. Currently, the deviations from the original build (sheet) are as follows:
- 15x7 chrome magnum 500"s & Radial T/A"s replaced the steel wheels (Original wheels & dog dish hubcaps included) - Factory AM/FM radio replaced the original AM only radio - Rear speaker option with dash mounted fader added - Factory tachometer added - Stock rear defogger added - Gas/brake pedal trim added - Woodgrain (sport) steering wheel added
During the last 20 years the current owner has made many improvements to the original restoration, including: -Brand new 26" 2898048 radiator from Glen-Ray radiators. -Brand new dual exhaust system from Accurate exhaust. Correct, date coded Chrysler resonators were also added. -Engine & trans were removed and detailed to more exacting standards. Correct Hemi carburetors were restored and the t ransmission was rebuilt Cylinder heads were removed and rebuilt, and correct date coded parts were added. -Radial tires & chrome wheels added for better drivability. -New Mopar red cap group 27 battery was installed. -New Mopar performance XHD (Hemi) leaf springs installed. -An electronic ignition distributor, which looks just like the stock dual point, was installed. The original dual point type Prestolite distributor is included. -A rebuilt Hurst shifter was installed, but the original inland type shifter with the release lever is included.
This car is "turn key" ready to go, and performs nicely. Suspension and brakes have all been rebuilt, driveshaft was balanced and the car is easy to start & drive. Owner can work with you on shipping, but you must arrange and pay for the carrier. It is located in Southern California (92861 zip code) and is available for viewing on an appointment basis.
