Vehicle description
In 1964 Chrysler re-introduced the awesome Hemi V-8 to compete and dominate Nascar and Drag Racing. The Super Stock class was extremely competitive and all manufacturers were looking for that edge, which would give them the advantage. The Hemi gave Chrysler the power advantage, but Super Stock cars were limited to a 7" tire width and getting all that power to the pavement was proving elusive. Chrysler engineers came up with a plan to move the front wheels 3" forward to improve weight transfer. They built 4 cars known as "2 percent" cars and they began to win races.
In 1965, Chrysler engineering wanted to improve on a good idea and decided to increase the forward movement of the axle 10" in front and also 15" in the rear! Twelve cars were so prepared ( 6 Dodges and 6 Plymouths ) and Mopars began dominating at drag strips nationwide. NHRA classified the altered wheelbase cars in A/FX, but most people looked at them and said they look "Funny". . The name stuck and Funny Car class was born !
