“Dressed in a new blue exterior, the paint and white trim pieces are in overall very good condition and the color combination is quite eye-catching. This van underwent a cosmetic restoration along with an engine build by the previous owner and looks great. The bodywork remains straight and solid, the engine bay is very tidy and the cargo area behind the front seats looks great. This van is rated for 213 cubic feet of space behind the front seats, carries a 21-gallon fuel tank and there is a full-sized spare tire in the right rear corner of the cargo bay. The rest of the interior features new painted metal surfaces that match the exterior’s color and new black upholstery. The bucket seats look great, there is a black headliner for the front one-third of the van’s roof that is in good order. A two-spoke, black steering wheel faces the driver in the upright configuration necessary in a COE design. The horn is inoperable.” |

This is a classic van from the cab-over-engine (COE) Mopar era, commonly used by tradesmen, contractors and utility companies during the 1960s. Check out this 1965 Dodge A100 Window Van, now at MotoeXotica Classic Cars, when was the last time you saw one for sale?
Made in Chrysler’s Warren, Michigan Truck Assembly, this van was sold at Key Dodge Inc., in Peoria, Illinois on June 12, 1965. It is one of 36,535 six-cylinder-powered vans Chrysler made in 1965. Dressed in a new blue exterior, the paint and white trim pieces are in overall very good condition and the color combination is quite eye-catching.
The white front and corrugated, white rear bumpers are in great shape. New window seals have been installed all around
Rolling on new Hankook Optimo radials, size 215/75R15 at every corner, each tire is mounted on steel wheels with white beauty rings and chrome factory center caps. The wheels are in very good order.
Between the driver and front passenger is an oversized armrest that doubles as a sound-insulated engine cover. Lift up the insulated cover to expose the venerable 225 CID Chrysler “Slant” straight six-cylinder engine, which has been rebuilt. In this example, it is buttoned to a three-speed manual transmission with a column-mounted shifter and backed by a 3.55:1 rear end. The transmission has a new clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearings. Other new parts – brakes, muffler and wiring.
The horn is inoperable. The blue instrument panel has a full suite of gauges that reportedly all function as intended. Inner door liners look great and feature black armrests. Behind the front seats is a ProTecta® Skidgard floor mat that covers most of the cargo floor.
The Forward Control style, with no hood, remains nearly unique among mainstream vans. What’s more, it was used as the basis not only for a van and closely related compact truck.
According to the July 1964 issue Popular Science (the ‘65s debuted with no major changes): “Driving position is excellent in the Dodge. Front bucket seats are firm and form-fitting. The automatic transmission lever, which resembles a beer spigot, is conveniently mounted on the dash. The interior is neat, though by no means lavish. Front door windows are retractable but rear windows are sealed shut.”
Popular Science also found the A-100 to be set up well for hauling, with a better ride loaded than empty, which set it apart from its crosstown rivals. “For a vehicle of this type, control is excellent over rough roads and through hairpin curves. Big leaf springs front and rear resist lean. Ride is firm, the result of stiff springs and shocks. Loaded lightly, the Dodge may annoy people who are used to passenger car comfort. But with a full load, ride improves tremendously; springs are then operating at design capacity.”
Competition to this A100 in 1965 included Chevrolet’s Sportvan, Ford’s Econoline, GMC’s Handi-Bus and Volkswagen’s Type 2 or Bus.
Documentation includes the van’s original owner’s manual.
