Vehicle description
Beautiful fresh restored finished in its factory Colorado Red , this example is powered by its factory 2.9L inline-six paired to a 4-speed transmission with electric overdrive .
The car is said to be entirely stock other than small modifications for reliability, including a 12-volt conversion , ignition upgrades, and an electric auxiliary fan.
Starting out as a relatively solid and presentable 49k mile example, the car was disassembled down to its semi-monocoque chassis, mounted on a rotisserie, and sandblasted of all paint and grime.
Body panels appear largely well aligned, though the passenger door could benefit from a slight adjustment. Front and rear bumpers have both been rechromed, as has all exterior brightwork with the exception of the front window frame. Seam beading and rubber weather seals look fresh. New headlights and cans were fitted, while other lenses look presentable with new bulbs installed throughout.
A curved windshield with vent windows was fitted to BJ7 convertibles along with chrome door finishers, and wind-up windows took the place of the side curtains fitted to older roadsters.
A more practical convertible top was also featured, refurbished here with fresh fabric stretched over new wood bows and a cleaned and repainted metal frame.
Out back, the trunk houses a new liner, spare wire wheel and knockoff tools, along with a fresh battery powering a positive-ground 12-volt electrical system via a new main switch.
The 2.9L cast iron inline-six is reportedly original and was rebuilt by a Dallas machine shop. Cylinders were bored .030″ over, the crank was ground .010″ on rod and main journals, and new pistons and rings were installed along with fresh bearings throughout.
A new timing chain rotates a turned and polished camshaft, while new lifters and pushrods actuate the valves in the milled and rebuilt cylinder head.
The twin SU carburetors were cleaned, rebuilt, and adjusted, then capped with Coopers pancake air cleaners. A new fuel pump was installed with all new lines.
Intake and exhaust manifolds were cleaned and polished, while the engine block and rocker cover were repainted in Austin metallic green.
New brake and clutch master cylinders were also fitted along with all new brake lines. New bearings and bushings were installed in the cam-and-peg steering system.
Front Girling disc brakes have refreshed calipers along with new front pads and rotors, while the rear drums were turned and given new shoes and other internal components.
The car has no outstanding mechanical issues and is ready to use as is.
Suspension and drivetrain components were coated in POR-15 , while fasteners and ancillary items were refreshed as needed before reassembly. The 4-speed transmission is optioned with a factory Laycock de Normanville electric overdrive unit, which is said to work well thanks to a new solenoid and switch. The oil pump was rebuilt and no leaks appear to be present thanks to a new rear main seal and fresh gaskets throughout.
