• California Corvair Van! • One of only 18,007 Corvair 95 vans made in 1962, hard to find today • 145 CID air-cooled, flat six-cylinder engine • Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission and 3.89 gearing • Aqua exterior with white trim • Panel interior • New American Racing Torque Thrust five-spoke wheels • CB radio • 95-inch wheelbase, 4600 GVWR • 191 cubic feet of cargo volume, 1,795-pound payload
Against its competition from Ford’s Econoline, Chevrolet’s Corvair 95 Panel Van stood out for its engine type and location.
Made in General Motors’ St. Louis, Missouri factory (VIN code S), this van is finished in aqua with white trim, which are in overall excellent order. This California van has a body that is straight, its chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body, its engine bay is very tidy and the custom panel cargo area inside is in very good order.
This van rolls on Hankook Optimo 724 radials, size 205/75R14 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a new American Racing Torque Thrust five-spoke wheel. The wheels and tires are all in very good shape. This van rides a 95-inch wheelbase and a 4600 GVWR.
Out back, beneath the cargo cover is a 145 CID air-cooled, flat six-cylinder engine. The motor is backed by a Powerglide, two-speed automatic transmission and 3.89:1 final drive. The Corvair’s rear-engine facilitated several design objectives, such as helping to balance fore-aft weight distribution and assure excellent rear wheel traction. With removable panels over the engine and transmission/transaxle, the powertrain could be fully accessed from above and below.
Inside, the van comes with a custom panel interior. The bench seat is in good order with mats on the floor. The headliner is in very good shape, as is the two-spoke steering wheel. The aqua metal dash looks great while the inner door liners are in good, original order. A dash-mounted shift lever, and underdash mounted JVC AM/FM stereo with CD player and a General Electric Citizens’ Band radio complete the interior but the fuel gauge, speedometer and horn are inoperable. In the vans, the lowered mid-section allowed easy access for passengers and loading of cargo, with intermediate doors on both left and right sides in some models.
With no engine to squeeze between the seats, the cab was exceptionally roomy and afforded comfortable driving; and with no obstructing longitudinal driveshaft, the rigid chassis could be located only 16 inches above ground.
Competition to this Corvan in 1962 included Ford’s Econoline Van and Volkswagen’s Bus. If you’re looking for a great vehicle to advertise a small business or if you collect the various varieties of Corvair, you should stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars to check out this unique van.
