Twelve 3 Speed Manual Roadster Exterior Color: Black Interior Color: Red Leather Body Type: Roadster Transmission: 3 Speed Manual Engine: 473ci V12 Title Condition: Clear Vehicle Description One of the finest you can buy! Believed to be one of approximately 20 Twelve 1407 Coupe Roadsters built by Murray for 1936! Refinished impeccably by one of the most superlative Packard historians and restorers in the industry! Professionally rebuilt, cosmetically near perfect, and maintained expertly since completion! A proven show winner and CCCA Caravan participant! A chance of a lifetime Packard ownership opportunity!
After the Great Depression of 1929 had crippled American lifestyle, Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, . . MI felt buyers of their exclusive product line would require more value for their money once on showrooms. It was decided that Senior Packards would become even more opulent and expensive! Style lines improved dramatically, and the numbered Series models continued as they begun in 1923. By 1931, adjustable shocks allowed for a new, driver-operated Ride Control system. The Twin Six twelve cylinder-equipped vehicles were simply renamed Twelves in 1933 and stayed this way through their final year of 1939.
With the introduction of a new medium-priced model, which came to production in 1935, named the 120 Model, it undeniably saved Packard from a similar demise as luxury brands as Stutz, Marmon, Franklin, Pierce-Arrow, and Duesenberg. This inexpensive Junior option was built by more modern mass-production standards, while the Senior cars continued to require slower, handmade traditional craftsmanship. Nearly 10 times as many Junior cars would be produced. Packard continued to be recognized as America"s strongest luxury brand the world over. For several reasons the 1936 model year, named the 14th Series instead of the 13th apparently for superstitious reasons, would become one of the most desired amongst serious Packard collectors. It would be the last year for suicide style forward opening doors, solid axle front ends, and availability of wire spoke wheels! The Twelve Coupe Roadster undeniably being one of the most beautifully sculpted Packards of all time!
We are very excited to offer this hard to find 1936 Packard Twelve 1407 Coupe Roadster finished in Gloss Black with Red pinstripe and supple Red Leather interior accented beautifully by Carpathian straight grained elm wood grained dash and steering wheel. Powered by its original 473ci V12 engine (#904604) producing 175 horsepower mated to a 3-speed floor-shifted manual transmission with synchromesh top two gears. Options & features include 17" stainless steel wire spoke wheels wrapped in new Firestone 7.50-17 High Speed 8-ply tube type wide whitewall tires, dual side-mounted spare tires with steel covers and Packard "See-Rite" mirrors, metal-inlayed wood door caps, Packard heater, Ride Control system, dual golf bag doors with key locks, vacuum assisted drum brakes, rear rumble seat with fold out arm pads, interior map light, 30 gallon gas tank, and more!
Our gorgeous example showcases an exterior restoration completed in 2001 that has survived exceptionally well while in the hands of its current caretaker of 18+ years! Having a proper, professional restoration hold up this well over time supports it was done right the first time. The dash wood graining, steering wheel, interior knobs & controls all appear in excellent condition. The interior seat leathers were reupholstered by expert Danny Slivinski, along with a new convertible top & boot, in 2015 using premium Grand Leather hides through Bill Hirsch and Haartz Stayfast canvass respectively. The exterior chrome is bright and smooth without any spotting or pitting, while the stunning exterior paint has held up brilliantly with only minimal age visible upon closer inspection. Always garaged, and only driven and the nicest of days during the limited season provided in the Midwest. Today, it continues to be an excellent driver provided with a battery cut-off hidden discreetly in front of interior seat for times of storage. It has received brand new tires and battery in 2018.
According the original Packard body tag attached bearing chassis #939-241, this car sold new on August 24th, 1936 from Packard Motor Car Co in Harrisburg, PA, and represents one of the oldest known bodies produced. A great opportunity for the astute Packard collector looking for the last of the great Twelves ever built! This Packard Twelve 2/4 Passenger 1407 Coupe Roadster would be a splendid addition! Please feel free to call with questions.
