Vehicle description
1970 Oldsmobile 442 with W-25 ram-air option, M22 4 speed transmission and 12 bolt posi rear end.1970 saw the introduction of the Olds 455 V8 as the standard 442 engine. Magazine ads using an offbeat mad scientist trumpeted “Dr. Olds introduces as large a V-8 as ever bolted into a special-performance production automobile!” Output was 365 hp (272 kW) and 500 lb·ft (680 N·m), with a 370 hp (276 kW) W30 option available. The 365 and 370 hp (272 and 276 kW) power ratings were conservatively underrated at a lower rpm. Both engines are believed by some to produce 410 to 420 hp (306-313 kW). It was the pace car at the Indianapolis 500 race in 1970, along with the Cutlass Supreme. Motor Trend praised the 442, stating that “it’s probably the most identifiable super car in the GM house”. In addition to the standard 442 offerings, W-30s and some 442’s received a W-25 fiberglass OAI (Outside Air Induction) hood to replace the bumper scoops that were on the 68 and 69 W-30s. This is an original Starlight black example still with its original Muncie 4 speed transmission with vin stamp on it (see pic). Nobody knows production numbers by color but black was one of the rarer colors. The engine is a correct for 1970-72 “F” 455 with the original intake and exhaust manifolds and “E” heads. Other than a few tiny rust spots here and there the car is basically rust free. I repaired rust damage on both qtrs by cutting out only the wheel opening lip and outer wheel house lip and welded in new patch panels. The floors, trunk, fenders, doors, hood, rear spoiler and roof are original to this car. The deck lid and hood were the only pieces repainted (along with the area around each rear wheel opening that was patched). The sun had peeled the paint off both. Both bumpers are new and the interior has been restored with new carpet, headliner and front seat covers. The tires are new on the original wheels. It came with the rally pack gauge setup but the tach didn’t work so I bought a new one. The speedo was broke so I had it rebuilt and it came back set to zero so the speedo only has about 700 miles on it. The gas gauge works but oil press and temp does not. I have had the gauges out and tested them and they both work so it is the sending unit or wire in between and have not had time to troubleshoot it but I know the gauges are good. All the glass is good. I have driven the car fairly regularly over the last couple years so it is well sorted and reliable. The trans was completely gone thru and shifts like butter and the car will leave 2 long black marks! The original Olds 12 bolt rear has the boxed control arms. Im not sure of the gear but it feels like a 3:31. The engine is fresh with a new clutch and flywheel. New weather stripping all around. Its just a pleasure to drive. The black paint on the doors, fenders and roof is the original paint for the car. It is thin but original as is the white double pin stripe down the sides. I have had the entire front clip off and replaced all the front end bushings, shocks, brake rotors, brake pads and shoes, ect. I also replaced the brake lines with stainless ones and installed a new master cyl. Exhaust system was also replaced. The shifter handle was rechromed and it has the orig am/fm radio. There is a bullet hole in the drivers door from a .22 pistol. Apparently the story is one of the cars previous owners wife had no tolerance for his running around with other women and caught him at some strange womens house where she fired once thru the door with him still in the car! I guess he “dodged a bullet” as it didn’t appear to go thru the door panel on inside. The pass door has a few little whiskey dents but nothing serious. It is not a show car but presents well at car shows and turns heads wherever it goes. I hate to sell it but it is time to rotate cars. Bid with confidence as real 4 speed, black ’70 442s optioned with W25 hood, 12 bolt posi, rally pack gauges and rear spoiler don’t come along very often. Don’t let this one get away!
