Vehicle description
1996 Porsche Targa. Extremely clean. Needs nothing. Always garaged.
Rare, only 462 built for North America. Alpine stereo, a/c just serviced. Grey leather. Minor scuffing to driver"s seat. $73,000 new
Optional ($1036) Midnight Blue Metallic with light grey leather. 70xxx miles. 0-60 in 5.4 secs. Top speed 171 mph. 282 HP net. The ’96 and later models have VarioRam induction which was a significant technological leap over previous engines.
The Targa is named after the famous Targa Florio, the world’s oldest endurance road race near Palermo Sicily, started in 1906.
The Targa is the rarest, by far, of all 993 variants. Total North American production for ALL THREE years was only 1151. Total 1996 North American production was only 462. The Targa option alone was over $7,000 in 1996. MSRP of this car was $72,973, equivalent to $119,130 today.
Targa exclusive 17” Speedline alloy rims have painted center caps and Michelin Pilot Sport tires with lots of tread. Engine has the factory “motor sound” package which includes a drilled air filter box and low restriction mufflers for better engine airflow. There is no sound more captivating than an air-cooled flat six. (except possibly a Ferrari V12!). Cross drilled brake rotors were standard equipment.
Car was purchased new at Momentum Porsche in Houston by a physician. 2nd owner was a collector from W. Linn OR, who bought it in May of 2001 with 16k mis. He sold it to a buyer in Austin Texas in Dec. 2007 with 19k miles on it. He was a software engineer with degrees in both mechanical and electrical engineering. I bought it in May 2014 with 67k miles. I am a PCA member and this is my 3rd Porsche. All owners have been non-smokers.
Car has the original spare, air pump, owner’s manual, MSRP window sticker and complete tool kit. CarFax shows no accidents. Bumper, hood and side view mirrors are covered in clear polycarbonate film to prevent rock chips. All glass is tinted.
Original leather wrapped gear shift knob was replaced with a RennSport billet aluminum unit. (the originals got stained and grimy very quickly)
Only known deficiency is the presence of minor oil drips (1-2 drops/week) if car isn’t driven regularly, common for air cooled engines. The car IS driven at least once/week, weather permitting.
Steering rack, chain tensioners, starter, cabin filters and plugs have been replaced since I purchased the car in 2014. Clutch, brakes and belts replaced by previous owner. Oil and filter changed at 69k mis. A/C expansion valve and filter/drier replaced in June 2019. I have repair receipts since 2002. An engine leak down test was performed at 67k mis. and found to be normal.
All work since Dec. 2007 has been done by either Targa Porsche Workshop or Thunder Motorsports, both longtime Porsche specialists.
Car has an Alpine stereo with 100w amp and blue tooth feature for hands free phone usage. There is minor wear to the driver’s seat bolster. Leather has been treated 2-3 times/year with Lexol to keep it supple. Car is garaged and covered at all times when not driven
FYI: $52,000 is the avg. FINAL sales price for non-turbo 993"s in the last 12 mos. on Bringatrailer.com which is a very good indicator of a car"s true market value (and many of those vehicles had MORE miles , were modified or had automatic transmissions). VERY few were Targas
