Vehicle description

For 1964 Chevrolet offered a hi-performance 365 HP 327 with solid lifters, high-lift long-duration camshaft, 2 ½ inch exhaust and a Holley carburetor. This engine option known as RPO L76 was originally offered in late1963 for 1964 model Corvettes and Chevelles. Reportedly a few Chevelles were ordered with this option but due to manufacturing shortages none were ever delivered. The engine was ultimately restricted to Corvettes only. Impalas were limited to a hydraulic lifter 327 rated at 300 HP.
So what might it look like if the L76 had been offered in the Impala line? During the restoration of my Impala I came across an actual Corvette L76 engine long since removed from it’s original home and bearing dates just prior to the assembly date of this Impala during the last week of October,1963. The engine has casting dates of October 17, 1963 on the block, aluminu mintake manifold and one cylinder head. The other head is dated October 9, 1963.The stamp pad on the block is coded F1019RE with partial Corvette VIN of 4103902. These codes indicate this 365 HP block was assembled October 19, 1963 and could have been installed in this Impala in late October, 1963, if the option had been offered.
The engine has been completely rebuilt with a .060 overbore and has the larger 2.02/1.60 valves with compression reduced to 10.5:1 from stock 11:1, a necessity with today’s pump gas.
I call this my Phantom L76 and have added a few upgrades as follows: - 700R4 4 speed automatic from Monster Transmission with shift kit, 2100 stall converter and polished oil pan. Console switch for torque converter lockup. - Hotchkiss front sway bar - 1962 rebuilt posi-traction unit with 3.73 gears. - A/C updated with modern compressor and other new components - 4 core Derale aluminum radiator with dual electric fans and thermostatic fan control - 2 ½ inch aluminum exhaust all the way back. Sounds great. - New console - Stainless brake lines - New brakes - Suspension completely disassembled, sand blasted and repainted with several coats of Imron. Red urethane bushings installed throughout suspension. - New motor mounts - New body mounts - New door panels - New headliner - Pertronix distributor with new wires and spark plugs - New hoses and belts - New alternator - New starter - New tires on powder coated 14x6 wheels - New 2-stage Tuxedo black paint. Stripped to bare metal.Rust cut out and replaced with new metal. Cut outs are bagged in the trunk. Clearcoat deglossed slightly to mimic original gloss appearance.
This is a real SS with model code 1447. It was originally White with Silver interior changed to Black and Silver by PO. I have the SS hubcaps but felt the poverty caps and redline tires better suited the engine choice and exhaust tone.
Have many pictures taken during strip down and restoration.Investment is considerable. Call or text with questions.
