“All original barn find. Running a civilian carburetor (and new brakes/lines) but otherwise all stock and original. Jeep runs and drives great (good oil pressure, cooling system). We recently took it on the national Moab Jeep Safari and it performed flawlessly. Original military markings still visible. Clean Utah Title.”

Vehicle description

1953 M38A1 Military Jeep – Original Paint and Markings
US Army, Hood Number 20993980. Can make out "828 QM" on front bumper and “Service” on side. . additional markings could be uncovered via some careful sanding. The paint was faded somewhat when we found it, but Linseed oil brought it back to a dark OD green. All the paint is original. The hood numbers were painted over with OD that closely matches the rest of the jeep. . I suspect when it was surplused out of the army.
Runs and drives great. 24,953 miles indicated. . speedometer works and it runs like those may be actual miles. Oil pressure is fine, generator charges the batteries, and the cooling system consistently holds 180 degrees. I rebuilt the brake cylinders (master and individual wheels) and put in a complete set of new brake lines. New tires and new canvas, but otherwise very original. I repaired some wiring and the lights work, including black-out headlight and tail light.
There is a small patch panel bolted in on the front passenger floor to cover a rust hole there (see photos) but otherwise the floors (including under-seat tool box), fenders, and frame are rust free. Utah is the second driest state in the US, just slightly damper than Nevada. . so almost no rust.
We do have a new civilian carburetor on it. (Original carburetor was missing.)
It handled the yearly Moab Jeep Safari just fine (Secret Spire, Chicken Corners and the first half of Kane Creek Canyon trails) . I had a custom roll cage built for it that matches the top bow dimensions. It is bolted in via existing holes in the body and frame, so it can be easily removed for parades and day-to-day driving. I"ll also include a new-in-the-box Lock-Right rear locker for it. I didn"t have time to install it before Moab.
Transport is the buyer"s responsibility. Clean Utah title, registered and road legal, but top speed is only about 50 mph. It tows easily however, we towed it behind our Nissan Xterra with no problems for the 600 mile round trip to Moab.
It"s a terrific jeep and I don"t know that I"ll find another "original paint" example like this again, but I need to sell it to cover some unforeseen expenses.
