Vehicle description

BARN FIND: 1977 Toyota Corolla
This is a genuine barn find. It"s in my son"s barn in Indiana. He now owns my former racer and has asked me to help write a description of it and the extra parts. The car was originally purchased by me in Las Vegas from it"s former owner/driver. It had been sitting for several years when I bought it. It had been used by several drivers to get their SCCA licenses to race. As I am 6"3" tall, I had to modify the interior roll cage and seating to fit me. You can tell it"s for a tall driver by looking at the head restraint attached to the drivers seat. Upon buying the car, I went totally through it, improving everything I could except the engine, which ran well even though it only had a 3/4 cam added to it"s base line.
I won my SCCA ITC class with 8 first place race wins in a row, and the championship. After the championship, I took the stock motor out and had two other engines built. A 1600 and and 1800 were maxed out by BRD Racing in Mocksville, NC so I could use the car as a track car. The current engine in it is the 225HP 3TC with 88 mm pistons (almost 2200 cc), special cam and everything it needs to wind out at 8,000 RPM all day long. You can see the engine at work at track day at Pahrump, NV by going to YOUTUBE and typing in. .77 Corola vs Vette. The only reason I didn"t pass the Vette is we were not allowed to pass in the corners, part of the regulations at that track day event.
In the ITC class, very few mods were allowed, engine wise. The engine was a 1600cc, 4-cylinder, hemi-head motor. At it"s finest hour, just before I won the championship, I had it Dyno tested and with a couple of tweaks to the 32/36 Weber, it showed 68.8 HP at the rear wheels with 84.3 pounds of torque. Not a lot, you might be thinking, but it surprised a lot of people by running with some of the higher ranked ITA and ITB cars.
Here are some of the things I did to the car for racing in the 2003-2004 SCCA Arizona Region Saguaro Series Regionals. The oil pan is a Morosco work of art, which today costs about $500. The 32/36 Weber carb has been race tuned. The radiator is a Griffin race radiator with an electric fan. The rear leaf springs have been de-arched so much so that they are more like traction bars than springs. The car is lowered to the class height of 5 inches. The adjustable front struts have 350 pound springs on them with the ability to change the camber. It is presently set at -3.
All hoses, except for radiator hoses, are braided stainless with AN fittings. It has an MSD 6AL ignition box with a 7800 rpm pill but I found I could run the stock ignition with points to 8,000 easily with no problems, so it is that way now. All ignition components/switches/etc are QuickCar, Longacre and MSD. It has HD front and rear sway bars. It has an AMB transponder - 0688956. The rear end is from a station wagon and is LSD. The driveshaft is steel and race balanced. There are all kinds of gauges and warning lights including low fuel pressure, oil pressure and coolant temperature.
There are fuel pressure and brake pressure regulators, detachable steering wheel, Kirkey aluminum seat and cover, fire extinguisher, TOYO RA1 tires, tach with shift light, brake ducting, high performance brake pads and shoes, electric fuel pump and filter, Sanderson header -four into one- made the greatest difference on original motor. There are a set of very lightweight aluminum/magnesium center race wheels. Ask my son about them. 7.5 pounds per wheel. The car handles superbly and that is why I was able to win those 8 races in a row. The body style of the "77 Corolla is considered a cult car and is highly sought after by West Coasters. I hope you have enough info, but I will be happy to answer specific questions via my son.
