Vehicle description

1986 Grumman Olson Step van on Chevy P30 chassis. This former Frito Lay delivery truck probably came out with a Chevy V8 engine, but at some point was upgraded with a Cummins 4BT 3.9 four cylinder diesel engine. The only time I was able to check fuel consumption I got 12.1 mpg. I expect actual highway mileage to be significantly better since there had been a lot of engine running and idling on this tank of diesel. When I bought it, it had a minimalist conversion to a camper and had been used for fishing trips to the Allagash region of Northern Maine. A friend drove it from Downeast Maine to Readfield where we have done a complete interior remodel using mostly new materials. We started by gutting the interior and discovered that it was already well insulated with rigid foam. We paneled the interior with FRP. Next was a layer if Lauan and new vinyl floor. The rear was turned into a bed area with storage and “utility” space below. This space houses new water tank, new water pump, new pex plumbing, new tankless propane water heater, and electrical components. There are also new kitchen cabinets, sink, hand pump and hot and cold pressurized water at sink, and a new two burner propane cook top. Wheel wells are hidden by kitchen cabinets on one side and the bathroom with shower and porta potty on the other. The sink drains into a five gallon jug in the cabinet below. A second five gallon jug supplies the hand pump at the sink. I chose this arrangement for simplicity and versatility. There is also hot and cold pressurized water at the sink, supplied by the pump from the fresh water tank. I did not install a gray water tank below the shower since I wanted to use a portable “Blue Boy” waste tank (included). Likewise the Porta-Potty eliminates the need for an installed black tank. For a refrigerator I went with a small chest freezer with Johnson Controls thermostat to keep temperature in “refrigerator” range rather than “freezer” temperature. This makes for a very efficient unit. Reclining passenger seat on a swivel pedestal has been added (not new).New voltage converter battery charger15 amp shore power connection, takes standard extension cordTwo deep cycle house batteries1500 watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter200 watts of solar panels installed. Two additional 100 watt panels purchased but not installedSix new 8R19.5 tires, installed 8/13/19New air bag spring helpersNew brake master cylinderNew mufflerDrives well, reminds me of my old VW Bus, but is a little noisier
