Vehicle description
NOTE: This will be the last week I"ll have it up for sale. After this week, I"m giving it to an old friend.
Here"s my story. . back in late 2005, I worked for the Miami Dolphins. I started out in the stadium as a programmer, and through most of my career with them, I worked at the training facility in Davie. In my first year with the Dolphins, I spent most of my time at the stadium and would occasionally have lunch in the stands and / or walking the concourse. One afternoon as I walked out to the concourse with my lunch to watch a Florida Marlins game, I spotted this lonely looking golf cart right outside the executive suites. .
(I apologize for the poor image, cell phone cameras weren"t great in 2005)
I immediately inquired about the golf cart. I wanted to know if I could buy it. I quickly spoke to the President of the Stadium (at the time, a man by the name of Bruce Schultze), who suggested I speak to engineering. I ran over to the engineering department, and he said they didn"t need it. It was at this point I learned that this golf cart was purchased when Joe Robbie built the stadium in 1987. This EZ-GO golf cart had been used by the Dolphins Training / Medical Department to haul injured players off the field and into the locker room. So, I ran back to the president and asked him if I could buy it. Bruce told me, "If you can get it out of here by the end of the day, it"s yours." I drove as quickly as I could to my friends house to borrow his tow dolly, and hook it up to my Crown Victoria. I took the rest of the day off, and I hauled the cart back home with the help of my friend Mike.
I took the golf cart home, and used it for many years hauling mulch and pavers into my backyard, and even towing a 1981 Pontiac TransAm WS6 with it through the neighborhood (real classy). Eventually, I left the Miami Dolphins and took a career that required me to leave the wonderful state of Florida.
"Dad! Do you mind if I keep this golf cart in your garage? It won"t be there for long, I promise. ."
So I quickly towed it to my parents house in The Villages, Florida (excellent place to visit, if you"ve never been, a lot to do, everyone is really friendly).
. . 9 years later, it"s still in my parent"s garage.
But it hasn"t just been sitting. My dad has routinely taken care of it. He completely restored the golf cart. I"ve been restoring cars for most of my adult life, and I was very impressed with the quality of work that he did. He even managed to source the original seating material for the 3rd seat (where the medic would sit).
So here"s where I get to the sad part of the story. . my dad told me. .
" If this Golf Cart isn"t gone in the next month, I"m selling it to the first person that gives me the time of day. . "
So. . I need to get rid of it. I live 1,600 miles away, and a Miami Dolphins golf cart would get vandalized in Dallas Cowboys territory, so I must let it go. Here are the specifics:
The Good: This is the only Miami Dolphins golf cart that has ever been personalized by the team. The golf cart has been completely restored. The golf cart had completely new deep-cycle batteries installed in 2014 The golf cart has been outfitted with brake lights, turn signals, and side mirrors to make it legal to drive on streets. None of the modifications were permanent, and used existing holes in the body. The golf cart runs / drives, and comes with an excellent newer (2010) 36v charging station by EZ-GO. Brand new tires! ! The golf cart is famous!
The Bad: The golf cart batteries were replaced in 2014. . they still hold a charge, but I think they need servicing.
One of the relays isn"t working, so it doesn"t go above 12 miles an hour. The other "villagers" at the Villages get upset, honk, and quickly pass you on their way to their next activity, all while giving you a stare. The front right rim is slightly bent when a trainer hit a curb at high speed. The golf cart hops a little bit at maximum speed.
The Ugly: My dad put a brand new tire on the passenger side while it was sitting for a couple of months, and it stained the seat vinyl. This can be redyed or cleaned up, but I"m not there to do it, and my dad is over it.
Some other interesting facts about the golf cart:
It was used in the move "Any Given Sunday" and Al Pacino rode around in it. At the time, they painted it yellow and installed yellow flashing lights on it to de-personalize it (the Dolphins re-painted and striped it with their colors again).
The golf cart was in use for over 21 seasons (1987 to 2008) with the Miami Dolphins. It also saw use in every single Orange Bowl. You can see this actual golf cart on the field in the image below. Sorry Penn State. .
So. . the golf cart is looking for a good home. . and hopefully that home will be in The Villages. Please tell your friends. Any questions, please don"t hesitate to ask.
