Up for sale is a 1953 - 1954 Belly Tank Racer. These legendary race cars were first built in the 1940"s using world war 2 external auxiliary gas tanks from out of service P38 (and other) airplanes and several other military surplus parts. Streaking across dry lake beds in the american west, belly tank racers were the platform that a generation of mechanics, designers and drivers used to set land speed records and spark the imagination of many of today"s gear heads. In 1951 a gentleman named Tom Beatty built a Belly Racer that was known to be the fastest in the world in the early 1950"s.
"After World War II ended, the belly tanks ended up in surplus and scrap yards. Hot rodders took notice. Beyond the belly tank"s super-fast shape, car builders noticed that the rear of the belly tank was just wide enough to install a car engine block and rear end. Given that hot rodders were already building and racing their own creations made from a hodgepodge of car parts, adding an airplane fuel tank wasn"t that far-fetched — especially when the surplus tanks could be bought for about $35". "Record-setting engines for belly tank racers include Ford, Mercury and Chrysler V-8s".
The ultimate Hod Rod. This Belly Tank Racer is built from a original steel 300-315 gallon Belly Tank off of a P38 military airplane. It comes with a V8 Flat head and a Lincoln Zephyr 3 speed transmission. Its got original 16" wide bolt pattern Artillery wheels for rollers and the original Edelbrock intake manifold with Sharp aluminum heads. It was fabricated by Bill Burke and he built several of these in his day. He is widely credited with first noticing that belly tanks would make great race cars. He built a Belly Tank Racer that made it up to 131 miles per hour. This is a very rare piece of racing history waiting for the next Belly Tank enthusiast to restore it and get it back on the salt.
