Vehicle description
Thanks for stopping by to take a look at this very cool 1977 GMC Royale Motorhome. Purchased here locally in inland San Diego County in southern California, she had been pampered by the original owners and stored away inside for many years.
Mom shared stories of trips to Colorado, Utah and Montana where she and Dad enjoyed many hours cruising in their “right sized” RV that Mom could easily handle. And, this is the only layout Mom would approve, with the rear DRY bath so rarely found. Enjoy your shower or bath without drenching the whole bathroom!
This lovely coach hopes to cruise America once again. Autumn colors are around the corner and the road beckons!
I have looked at a number of these GMC’s and they seem to fall into 3 categories: Show Queen, They are expensive and rare Loved, These were enjoyed and maintained to a high quality standard. Neglected, They are often low mileage, stored outside for decades and in need of tens of thousands of dollars worth of repairs just to be roadworthy.
The Show Queens are still rare, Loved coaches are few and far between and the vast majority fit the neglected category.
I would put this Royale in the Loved category. Having met the previous owner, I can vouch for this being a Loved girl who lived inside a nice warm garage (like she does now). She just doesn’t show the wear of an outside life. The gel coat still buffs to a nice gloss and she looks great. Pride of ownership is on display everywhere.
A common trait among vintage motorhomes is that many of the factory options and niceties are lost to the passage of time. People remodel or repair with either what’s available or what they see as an upgrade. In the case of this GMC Royale, I’d like to point out a few of those often lost or broken amenities that you can still find on this well loved example. Original overall condition. Notice that this GMC looks like it did when it was new. The cabinetry is excellent. The bathroom and DRY shower/bath is excellent. Everywhere you look it’s 1977, right down to the protected factory carpeting. The Blender! Ok, the NuTone food processing center. Too Cool. Birch Screen Door. Custom made for the GMC and a camping necessity. Vacuum. GMC Motorhomes were offered with an optional central vacuum system. This one is intact and operational. On most GMC coaches, this system is long gone. Leather Captains Chairs. Sliding in and out of a motorhome pilot or co-pilot seat can be taxing on the upholstery. These factory Captain Chairs, reupholstered in supple leather, will last another 50 years if properly cared for and make driving a pleasure.
Exterior.
26’ rear DRY bath model. AKA, the one everyone wants to sleep 6 comfortably and not drench the bathroom for a shower. Gelcoat is nice and polishes up excellently. Minor touch ups have been done over time. Nice stripes No accident damage T skirts. Nice glass throughout. NIce Chrome bumpers New lenses and lighting. (new roof marker lenses now installed front and rear) Roof storage box, locking Aluminum Ladder and roof rail option Rotating TV Antenna Doorbell !
Engine 455 V8 Oldsmobile Tornado Front Wheel Drive Fresh oil change Runs nice Fresh dual 12v batteries Dual 25 gallon fuel tanks
Transmission Drives and shifts nice. See video driving.
Braking, Steering Drives, runs and stops well. See video
Air Ride Airbags work well.
Glass The glass is in excellent condition. All windows operate properly. Screens are in place.
Interior
From the Captain’s position you’ll notice: Upholstery in great condition. Leather Swivel front bucket seats with folding armrests allow the pilot and co-pilot to turn and join the in-cabin fun. Excellent visibility through huge curved glass windshields. Screened vent windows throughout. Lots of power outlets for charging phones and computers. 12 Volt and 110. Full sized chrome mirrors, spot mirrors and lots of windows make driving a dream. Alpine AM FM Radio Tilt steering wheel CB Radio (10-4 good buddy!) Nice dash pad (an Inside girl trait)
In the Galley you’ll find: Well preserved kitchen with cabinetry in excellent condition. O riginal high end factory walnut wood cabinets. Dinette seats 4 for cards or meals. Cappuccino table with hidden mount. Preferred combo 4 burner stove and Oven. Double stainless steel sink with new faucet. The refrigerator and freezer both get cold. 110 Shore power Overhead light fixtures and exhaust fan. Coach auxiliary heating system (All there, not tested, summer here) Roof Air Conditioning. It blows cool, not super cold. Probably needs a recharge. New rooftop electric fans with watertight covers. Propane leak sniffer (ornamental-no idea if it works) Systems monitors. Onan generator hour meter at 197 hours. (On the list of things I won’t get to. Plus they’re noisy. For me, a newer quiet generator was in store since they are only about $500.)
Rear Bathroom model with separate shower,, closet and storage cabinets. Nicely kept. Shower curtain. See the video. No whirlpool tub, bidet or heated towel racks. Supplies include 3 holding tank disinfectant treatments new in the box. She smells nice now and will stay that way.
Sleeps 6 Looong Side by side bunks (for us tall guys and gals) Dinette converts to bed. Seatbelts for 6 Footwell night lighting
Onboard Vacuum System works well.
Odometer The odometer shows just under 37,000 miles. Per the prior owner, this is correct.
Generator We like the aftermarket generators that sit away from the coach and cost about $500. Less noise and vibration in the coach is a welcome relief from the Onan. The Onan is there but untested.
DMV Registered in Arizona with an Arizona plate and clean title. Out of State buyers can ship or drive out of CA on a “one trip permit” available from DMV or AAA.
Inspection I’m happy to make the coach available for your inspection at my location in Stanton CA 90680. I don’t offer joy rides.
