History at AM General I will paraphrase its history as told by the former AM General employee Mr. Williams (although I highly recommend watching the video as this writing won’t do it justice). AM General started their in-house fire department to promote safety in case of incident, and savings on insurance costs. Their main fire truck at the Chippewa plant was an American LaFrance. However, they also worked inside Plant 8, an old Studebaker building with low ceilings. The LaFrance simply couldn’t drive through, thus a smaller vehicle was required. This M151A2 Mutt rolled off the assembly line in 1977. Whether it was a prototype, quality test vehicle, or overrun we aren’t sure, but it was never sent to the military – rather was brought into the AM General maintenance department for fire vehicle modifications. Mechanics asked the fire fighters what they needed in a vehicle. What resulted was an ambulance M718 bed extension alongside rear seating with a large step, fire extinguisher mounts, a water pump, ladders, and various tool boxes. The exterior was painted red. Luckily there weren’t any memorable fires according to the AM General contacts, and rather the Mutt regularly served as a fire drill vehicle and used for fire extinguisher inspection. It would drive through Plant8 and riders would ensure the extinguishers were charged up. However, it was always ready to fire fight if necessary. Chippewa closed its doors in 1990, but this Mutt remained on duty for a short time after. Mr. Williams recalls working in Plant 8 until a few years later. We aren’t sure of exact details. The Mutt’s last dated oil change was 09/04/1992 – an end to 15 years of continuous service. It’s very possible the Mutt was last driven around this time or early 1993. Mr. Williams’s recalls towards the end of his employment, a handful of AM General vehicles were stored in a Quonset hut, including the firefighter M151A2. These vehicles, for a lack of better terms, were somewhat forgotten to history. Backtrack to Mr. William’s time at AM General. Periodically during assembly, a vehicle’s body panels would get damaged and need repaired. Mr. William’s recommended his friend Phil who owned Phil’s Toot N Tellem Body Shop as a repair center. AM General began sending their vehicles for repair, and a business relationship formed. Sometime around 2017, AM General began clearing out the forgotten Quonset hut. With Phil’s relationship now spawning decades, he was gifted theM151A2 and an M35A2. Approximately 40 years after the Mutt rolled off the assembly line, it finally left home. The vehicle traded hands a couple times including Phil’s brother-in-law Randy, eventually leading to my possession. In the beginning I was unsure if the story was a tall-tale or gospel. By sheer chance through an unrelated hobby, I connected with Mr. Williams and invited him over to see the Mutt in person. He provided a spectacular video interview, as well as talked to former contacts from his time at AM General. I also confirmed the story with a current AM General employee regarding the vehicle’s provenance. This M151A2 is essentially untouched as it left the factory. The additional firefighting equipment was most likely removed before it reached civilian hands. I poured oil into the cylinders, turned it over a few times, and found compression readings between 140-150 psi on each cylinder. With starting fluid it fired right up. Other than a test run, I have not touched the vehicle. There’s just under 6 months until the 2021 MVPA International Convention. At the show, AM General representatives will be selecting vehicles to be displayed at their pavilion and the owner’s receive a check for $1,500. With an untouched vehicle that’s only traveled 45 miles from the factory since 1977, this is a historical opportunity to own a part of AM General history.
