Bus Condition: This bus was retired by a west central Arkansas school district in January this year. The school advertised that it had a bad turbo went they put it out. However the turbo is actually performing well now. They had an engine light come on and noticed something with the performance so they took it to their bus sales/service company. They diagnosed that the turbo wasn"t working right and did some work on it but they said at some point the turbo would go out and would need replacement. The school districts have rather strict inspections by the state and the inspector said that the turbo would have to be replaced with a new OEM Cummins turbo. However other people who were said to have knowledge of the subject said that a used turbo from a 5.9L Cummins could be used on this engine (6.7L Cummins). This wasn"t an option for the school and they retire buses once they reach 10-15 years age so they decided to retire it. I don"t have any knowledge about what type of turbo can be used but just repeating what I was told.
So I bought the bus in January. I drove it home which was around 120 miles and personally it was one of the best performing engines I have seen. The bus could do 75mph easy and it actually was able to downshift going up hills and not lose but maybe 5mph speed. I"ve never seen a few size bus be able to do that. No engine lights on or any indication of problems but remember I am putting the notice out that the turbo will need replacement/refurbishment at some point in the future. When that will be is hard to know. So like I said this is a good driving bus, easy to see out of, and rather new compared to most retired buses. I will say that the inside is noisy as the inside panels in the ceiling and sides seem to rattle a lot when driving on even moderately bumpy roads. I also have all the original owner"s and maintenance manuals for this bus. I do not have maintenance records. The school signed the title off but left the buyer info blank so I will just hand this to the new owner and they can title it if they wish. School removed the front cross view mirrors. The mounts are still what shows on the hood.
