Vehicle description
Titled as an RV so an individual in Indiana can legally drive it.
This is the “infamous” school bus toy hauler as featured on Jeep’s official website JeepWave and a couple YouTube videos with approximately 350,000 views. It has been designed to look and operate like a modern bus, yet be functional as a car hauler. The entire back end was converted into a swinging door.
I have driven this from Indiana and across the Colorado Mountains, all the way out to Las Vegas, rounding into Texas and back to Indiana totaling over 6,000 miles without issue. Made a few smaller 10 hour round trips as well. It has been very reliable. If you look up MuddOxRacing on YouTube, you can see the video where I initially purchased the bus, a few videos during my cross-country trip, and a finished project overview.
I spent 6 months researching the ultimate school bus to start with. It needed to have maximum interior space, quality drivetrain, brakes, and overall mechanical reliability. The final selection was a 2008 Thomas Freightliner Saf-T-Liner C2 with now 186,000 miles. It has the Cat C7 diesel engine, automatic transmission with overdrive and electronic engine braking, air brakes and air suspension. To my knowledge this bus has the tallest ceiling offered by any model. It was still certified to haul kids for the 2018-19 school year when I purchased it.
In 2019 the entire goal for this project was to take my buddy and I’s two Jeeps out to Moab for free, as a last-hurrah from graduating college. While out west, we purchased a third rust-free Jeep and hauled back to Indiana to resell, thus paying for the entire trip. After our adventure, we sold the bus to a local individual. I recently purchased it back with hopes of completing the trip once again, but another opportunity has come my way and thus looking to sell. In the last 2 years the swinging door has held up exceptionally well with no water leakage.
It was an extreme amount of work that couldn’t have been done without talented help. This is an opportunity buy, turn the key and roll.
Service done in 2019 New front tires New batteries New rear suspension air bags Oil change I called the bus garage and verified the brakes were serviced shortly before I bought it.
Modifications Rear end converted into swinging door Shortened wheel well humps Two passenger captain’s chairs Electronic brake controller Trailer hitch
Dimensions inside 27 ft long 82” wide on the narrowest section Ceiling 76” center point, 75” on end of slope, and 69” on the very sides where the speakers are. Wheel well humps 4.25”
Outside dimensions 38 ft long by 8 ft wide Approximately 8.5 mpg fully loaded. Cruises at 70 mph.
Fuel tank has a slow leak, has been that way since the school owned it. Rear tires are at the wear line and have very minor cracks, will need swapped in the future.
Jeeps, ATV"s, and trailer are not included in the sale - only the bus itself.
