Vehicle description
2001 PETERBILT 379 45 TON(EST) SHOP BUILT WRECKER . Cat c12 430hp 13spd od trans .First off this truck was custom built by us in our shop and is currently licensed and insured as a heavy duty wrecker in Illinois .It has not been crane certified but use has never required that here .We purchased the truck in 2013 and spent over 3 years building it . It is not a major brand name . It does however resemble one , a lot of time and money was spent researching and developing the best set up . Every part was speced heavier with hauling loaded cement mixers and tandems with heavy front load in mind . This was the 4th truck we built with no expenses spared on this one ,We have sold the others including the one this replaced on here with all good feedback , the reason for selling is a turn in business plans and not doing heavy towing any more. You can look at the pictures or come see it operate in person by appointment. We have a facebook page at Harmon Trucking and Repair that you can view the pics building it in the album new heavy wrecker build. When we bought the chassis in 2013 the mileage was marked exempt and was told it had a recent rebuild but was a repo with no paperwork ,we have no reason to date to doubt that as it runs perfect and never has used any oil . the odometer reads 227,000 + but doubt that is correct .At that time we put in a new radiator , stretched the frame , new brakes , air bags & hardware , added a Reyco 13200# self steering tag axle (new) . Removed the sleeper and put a ultra cab flat panel day cab conversion on with a new air ride cab system (didn"t replace the front cab mount bushings and should have it needs them .) .installed a low mount exhaust system. The suspension specs are GVW 67000 / FRT 13500 / TAG 13500 / REARS 20000 EA . Tires are steer 315/80 22.5 , tag 11R22.5 , drives 11R22.5 . steer and Drives where new when truck built and excellent shape . Tag tires are used & ok . Hydraulics was all new at build , Vickers tandem pump feeding two separate circuits - high volume side for winches & low volume for cylinders , with an added hydraulic cooler for long run times. All controls and cylinders are Prince brand.
The boom is set up with cable controls to both rear boxes on each side to allow operation from either side . It is also equipped with wireless remotes to operate under reach in/out & up/down and main boom up/down and both winches . It is equipped with two DP 45000 hydraulic winches , they do not have free wheel option . They have 1" cable currently which we where going to swap out to 3/4 to ease handling . We had planned on putting a side puller on behind the cab later so it has the hydraulic circuits and controls for another winch and two stabilizers.
The truck is set up with all LED marker lights , headlights and inside boxes ,LED light bar and LED warning lights on box, the spot beams on boom are 24v with transformers . It has a rear view color camera to aid hooking / backing. The boom telescopes 11" , the under reach extends to 110" from tailboard to center of tool holder . this is only a single extension under reach but have never had any trouble reaching anything we had to get , we wanted to keep it as strong as possible as 20k+ front end loaded trucks where what we picked up a majority of and we never had an issue . Sorry I didn"t measure ht of boom extended but in pic you can get a good idea. Truck currently scales out at 37,260# +- , carrying 12,100# steer and 25,160# drives with tag in up position. This truck is a workhorse and has performed flawlessly since we put into service and is still currently running calls if needed until sold . THE BAD - It is used ya know - It needs frt springs , they are weak - we where going to upgrade to 14 or 16 k springs depending on side puller O/D in transmission makes noise , believe the back needs rebuilt / bearings but not sure .only when splitter is in od . truck runs 70 in direct. The fan on the hydraulic cooler quit , it is just an option thou for hot / long run times . Never really needed it. A/C did not work last time out . Drive tires are imports and have always had a bounce effect at around 30 mph . not bad , but annoying at that speed , balancing didn"t work you can see tires out of round a bit on balancer . Rims are fine. front bumper got bent up in heavy snow and right front fender has a kink in it. no glove box cover. It obviously needs more front side boxes built , we didn"t have time , and if a side puller is not wanted a large tunnel box can be put in front of the boom . Note the Wrecker body is built pretty much the same as the big name brands and has a full length sub frame(heavy) that is directly bolted to the truck frame the same way jer dan miller does with side wing plates . If needed the bed can be easily unbolted , unhook the hydraulic main lines to pump & electrical and lifted off / put on another rig complete . You will be impressed with the craftsmanship & thought that went into this. This truck will make you money , health and business direction reasons have brought me to sell it and I hate to see it go !
The truck is still being possibly used if needed so mileage may change . FOR SALE LOCALLY SO LISTING COULD BE ENDED EARLY ! !
May take partial trade on a decent 16-20 ton . For local viewing or questions contact Mike at Harmons Trucking & Repair 625 S 5th Ave , Canton Illinois 61520
