Vehicle description
1999 International Amtran school bus conversion for sale. This is a diesel pusher with the engine in the back of the bus. The bus is 41 feet long and has air brakes. The bus is registered in Colorado as a motorhome which means you do not need a CDL to drive this bus. This bus has a higher then normal roof which means most people will be able to stand up comfortably inside the bus without needing an expensive roof raise.
The bus has the International T444E engine (the International version of the Ford 7.3 Powerstroke) and an Allison 545 4 speed transmission. The bus shows 184894 miles. The previous owner reported that he had rebuilt the engine about 10,000 miles before we purchased it, so that would be around 15,000 miles ago now. The previous owner provided the following list of work he had done:
Rebuilt 210 HP block with all new gaskets ARP head studs New upgraded turbo pedestal Brand new intercooler (charge air cooler) Freshly cleaned and tested radiator New fuel pump with upgraded 72 PSI regulator Water pump Rebuilt HPOP (high pressure oil pump) with new heavy duty high pressure oil hoses Heavy duty alternator New air brake shoes Fresh axle lube New gauge cluster New steer tires The previous owner also reported that the Allison transmission had been rebuilt a month before it was pulled from service.
There is a small oil leak from the dipstick filler tube. We have not had the leak looked at because it has never been an issue. We just add a little oil every couple months if we are driving the bus.
We have not independently verified that the work listed by the previous owner was actually done, but based on how the bus runs and drives it appears accurate.
We bought this bus last year and since then we have used it on a number of trips with no issues at all. We have driven this bus from Phoenix to Colorado and all over Colorado. This bus has been up to the mountains in Fairplay and back down with no issues. The bus starts immediately and drives amazing every time.
The bus is mostly converted. The back of the bus has a platform which fits a queen mattress and two bunks on either side of a center aisle. One bunk has a basic piece of foam for use as a mattress and the other side was mostly used for storage.
There is a small area for a bathroom with currently has a Dometic portable toilet.
The kitchen area has a Magic Chef chest freezer which has been converted using a temperature regulator to work as a refrigerator. The refrigerator is set up to run off of a Goal Zero Yeti 1000 lithium solar generator, which is connected to a Renogy 100w flexible solar panel on the roof. This setup is very energy efficient, and at this point we have been running the refrigerator using solar power only for the past couple months. The Yeti also powers a series of Goal Zero Lite a Life LED lights which provide interior lighting for the bus.
The front of the bus has two platforms built on either side of the aisle which are used for seating or could be used for an additional sleeping area. One platform has a basic foam cushion and the other has a brand new (purchased this week) futon mattress.
The bus has a basic electrical system which is essentially two 15 amp plugs on the outside of the bus which are connected to separate power strips inside the bus. When we camped in locations with shore power we would plug into the campground power using this system in order to power our heater and appliances.
The kitchen has a sink but does not have running water at this point. We used a very simple water setup where the sink drained into a portable water container, and fresh water was provided by a separate water container. There is no hot water heater.
We purchased a 15 gallon water tank and a Bosch electric mini-tank hot water heater which we were going to use to improve the water system but we never got around to installing them. We will include both with the bus but you will need to install them yourself.
The bus has a window unit air conditioner which the previous owner provided. We have never used the air conditioner because it was never warm enough to need it so it is unknown if it actually works. The air conditioner can be used by opening one of the side windows and sliding the air conditioner in.
We purchased a Dwarf 5kw wood stove from Tiny Wood Stove along with the kit needed to install it but we have not gotten around to actually installing the stove. The stove is included with the bus but you will have to install it yourself.
The stove and installation kit cost me $1525 all together: https:/ www.tinywoodstove.com/product/small-stove-the-dwarf-5kw/
The Goal Zero Yeti 1000 Lithium is currently on sale for $824 but cost over $1000 when we bought it: https:/ www.goalzero.com/shop/power-stations/goal-zero-yeti-1000-lithium-portable-power-station/?gclid=CjwKCAjw8qjnBRA-EiwAaNvhwKiBr19Nauy60O9hz79uUeQyPQccwWdoXrqWwkZ2tX429CWV-5JGPhoCrVUQAvD_BwE
Goal Zero light a life lights cost $74 for each set and we have two sets in the bus: https:/ www.goalzero.com/shop/lights/light-life-mini-4-pack-shades/
One of the lights on the back of the bus is cracked. There is a small crack in the glass of the entry door and a small crack on one of the side windows near the front of the bus. We included pictures of the damaged windows.
The bus has 4 storage compartments underneath the bus. The compartments have locks but the keys we have for the bus do not seem to work so it is not currently possible to lock the storage compartments.
We have loved this bus and the only reason we are selling it is that we are having a baby in a couple months and won"t have time to keep working on this project.
Please note that the bus does not have running water, has only a basic electrical system, and has a portable toilet as the bathroom.
The bus is located in the Denver area. The buyer is responsible for pickup or shipping arrangements. We currently pay for storage for the bus so once it is sold we cannot store it for you for more than a week. We will accept cash or certified check from your bank only. We would also be willing to use Escrow.com if you want to use an online bank transfer. The bus is sold as is and all sales are final. Please ask any questions you have or better yet contact me to come see the bus before you make an offer.
If you have been looking for a skoolie conversion then this is the bus for you! Most of the really hard work has been done, no seats to remove or walls to install!
